I bought Haitink's 2016 recording but although it is beautifully played it was just a bit cool for me .

I rather liked his Prom performance, although some people thought, it wasratgher long. I didn't think so.

The Haitink recording to go for is the one with the Berlin Philharmonic which, in my view is better than the, still excellent, new Munich performance. Haitink, in all of his recordings, has the full measure of this extraordinary work. Abbado, in all of his recordings, reins in the timpani at the very end and I feel that to be a mistake. Too many conductors speed up as the finishing line comes into view and that's another mistake. Haitink keeps a firm grip on proceedings here to splendid effect.

Like HD, I've never been convinced by the hinaufziehen effect either. Startling at first, it becomes wearisome on repetition. Incidentally, I heard Mark Elder do this before Rattle got round to it.

Apparently, both Elder and Rattle were a little late to the table. Back in 1960 Berthold Goldschmidt was getting the Philharmonia players to produce Mahler's hinaufziehen, which is more easily achieved on the Viennese oboe the composer was used to than on the standard instrument in use today.

See my post #165 - any views, Bryn? As played on that oboe, it sounds, well, "right", which Rattle never quite does for me.

That Gielen recording has led the field for me since getting it as part of Gielen's Mahler Symphonies box (later supplemented by his full Mahler 10 and the cobbled together DLvdE) on Rob Cowan's recommendation.

Any views on Sinopoli Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart, Frauenstimmen (SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart) Kölner Rundfunkchor, Frauenstimmen, Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben, Waltraud Meier (Alt)?

We discussed it a while back e.g. Amateur51 was big on it. I passed it over at £16, I regret (now 2nd hand copies start from over £40 on Amazon).

Word on the street is that it's the best performance out there.

I was just thinking about this very performance when skimming through Weitblick CDs looking for Heinz Rögner. I'm not a great believer in, "the best", but I think that it's a terrific performance. It's a symphony that really plays to Sinopoli's strengths as a musician - and Waltraud Meier, who, by coincidence I was listening to five minutes ago as the Woodbird in James Levine's, "Gürrelieder" (excellent), is very good. I'm sorry that it now seems to be so expensive but, actually, if I had a gun put to my head and was told to choose one recording of Mahler 3, I think that it might be this one, warts and all (it's a live recording).
