Khachaturian Violin Concerto Oistrakh vs. Kogan

Well I would get it to have that wonderful Reiner Alexander Nevsky primarily ! Excellent as Kogan is .

It has been a lucky concerto on record - Kogan , Perlman , Fischer and Oistrakh are all very fine. Haendel however is in a class of her own to my ears .

Interesting that the Philharmonia discography doesn't list that Oistrakh/Kondrashin - could it be a live performance? The 2 listed are:

Igor Oistrakh in December 1953 with the Philharmonia and Goossens at Abbey Road [no CD I know of] and

David Oistrakh in November 1954 with the Philharmonia and Khachaturian himself at Kingsway Hall EMI 361 570 2. I have this one and it is fine.

I doubt it had anything to do with your liking Khachaturian, unless it was his 3rd Symphony, which many do hear as rather OTT.

I have the very old but splendidly played version by Ricci, plus versions by Szeryng and Khachatryan ( No connection ! )

They are all good, but I have to ask if the music is really worth it. I'm afraid that Aram tends to be on my noisy but worhless list.

Hard to argue, but for me he is a "guilty pleasure".

I don't feel any more guilty about the pleasure I get from the occasional listen to something by Khachaturian than I do from listening to some Billy Mayerl or Ketelbey, both of whose music I admire and enjoy. I recall how my liking for AK's 1st Symphony got me some sour looks from 'more sophisticated' music lovers when I was in my teens. I recently acquired a CD transfer of the Gauk recording I used to listen to in MK LP format. It's on one of the discs in a 10 CD Gauk set. I must give it a spin to renew my acquaintance with it.

Jean-Pierre Rampal also modified it to serve as a flute concerto. It seems Khatchaturian had rather little to do with it, though did not veto the effort. Not quite the same situation as Prokofiev's flute sonata, where the composer later modified that work for performances on the violin, and again David Oistrakh was involved.

There are several recordings in the flute version. I have enjoyed most that I've heard, though I can't say one stands out from the others. Perhaps I've not listened to enough versions, and I'm not rushing to lieten to more. It'd be interesting to hear Rampal - I think there may be at least two recordings - one on Sony/CBS and one on Erato. They may be expensive or difficult to get. There was a BBC MM CD of the violin concerto years ago with a young peeformer worth hearing.

Are you sure they are different recordings? Erato and CBS used to share some recordings. For instance, the old Boulez recordings of Messiaen's Et Expecto ... and Couleurs de la Cité Céleste has been on both labels, even on CD, simultaneously.

Anyway, the way I feel about this piece, it that every so often it is exactly the piece of music I want to hear. I think its a terrific piece, life affirming, and thoroughly enjoyable.

She? Wasn't it Rafal Payne in 1996? Maybe more contestants played this, so your recollection of the 1980s could be right, but I can't find details.
