Of course many companies haven't used these "jewel cases" for some years, but it beats me how such a poor design was put on the market in the first place.
The CD jewel case was a botched attempt by Philips to convert their cassette case design to fit the CD. It should never have happened.

Polystyrene is just too brittle for the job. BIC used to (maybe still do) make a slim CD case that used a more 'plastic' plastic (HDPE?). Unfortunately, they were/are too slim to take a booklet. DigiPack cases vary. Some use polystyrene hubs, and others use polyethylene.
