One -Off chamber music special recordings

Looking through my CDs the other day it struck me that there have been occasional one-off collaborations between artists that have made very special records indeed . I am listening to one at the moment - The Strauss/Respighi Violin Sonatas with Kyung Wha Chung and Krystian Zimerman .

They make these works sound like utter masterpieces.

Any other one-off chamber specials mean much to you - I can add du Pre/ Bishop Kovacevich in Beethoven Cello Sonatas 3 and 5 , Rostropovich/Argerich in Chopin Sonata , that legendary Perahia/Lupu Mozart and Schubert coupling .

What a wonderful record ! Thanks for prompting me to get it . What happened to Ms Danczowska? She plays magnificently and with superb tone and so little strain- she knocks even Chung off her perch .

I see she is a Professor in Krakow but apart from a recording of Mozart Sonatas with Zimerman on a label called Wifon and what appears to be a more recent coupling of the Szymanowski concertos with Kord and the WPO on Accord she seems to have completely disappeared from view .

I might go to more concerts if the soloists were such fine and apparently forgotten older artists than the latest wunderkind with their technically perfect identikit performances of the Bruch G Minor !

I have always thought André Previn a very fine chamber musician. His Mozart piano quartets with the Vienna Musikverein Quartet have always been very special to me. I used also to enjoy a tape of Mendelssohn and Schumann trios that he did with Kyung-Wha Chung & Paul Tortelier but it reached the end of its life and I hope for its reissue.

The great Rostropovitch/Britten recording of the Schubert Arpeggione sonata coupled with the Bridge sonata was almost their only chamber music recording, though they did also record some Schumann and Debussy, and Britten's cello sonata. Pollini and the Quartetto Italiano combining to record the Brahms Piano Quintet is another memorable one-off partnership, as I think is Curzon's recording of the Dvorak Piano Quintet op 81 with the Vienna Philharmonic Quartet. I also like André Previn's performance of the Mozart piano quartets with the Musikverein Quartet, another partnership that I can't recall being repeated on disc.

I realise that this will leave me open to ridicule but I very much enjoyed the Lang Lang, Repin and Maisky recording of the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov No. 1 Trios.

There's was an outstanding Gidon Kremer led recording of the Schubert C major Quintet on Philips that was available briefly and then disappeared.

I agree with you. Building a Library felt that Lang Lang was too self indulgent in the Tchaikovsky, but I love it for the beauty of sound & the conversation between the three players.

Previn made a lovely disc of Ravel & Shostakovich piano trios with Ralph Kirshbaum and Yong-Uck Kim around 1974 I think. It was my first recording of the Ravel and it is of course my favourite

Recently he has been performing with Anne Sophie Mutter, and they still seem to have great affection for each other. Sadly he's a lot less mobile then erstwhile, but still able to play. OTOH Menahem Pressler is older, but seemed agile enough when I saw him a few years ago.

I wouldn't dispute that, and I was just about to post this:

Brahms: String Sextet No.1 - Stern, Casals, Foley, Schneider, Katims, Thomas (1956)

which makes a nice partner, and is certainly an all-time favourite of mine!

Am 51 - what did you think of the Chung/Zimerman disc . The Danczowka/Zimerman is quite superb - why she is not an international star nowadays beats me .
