Going back to the Berglund Sibelius mentioned at the start of this thread.......

I am new to Sibelius, so I don't really know what is what just yet. Some of you said you were really interested in Berglund's cycle with Bournemouth. I don't have this, but I do have his cycle with the Helsinki Philharmonic (picked up very cheaply some time ago.......). Is this better or worse or different in any substantial way? Is it a good start starting place for Sibelius?

As per the original thread, the one recording we piano lovers have banged on for years about is the Lazar Berman double of Liszt Transcendental Studies on EMI. I stupidly gave the LPs away years ago and assumed we'd see it one day on CD - never happened...

As a lover of violin music, several favourites I have on LP but haven't yet seen on CD:
Campoli Bruch No 1 and Saint Saens Intr and Rondo and Havanaise, the old Ace of Clubs versions with Kisch and Fistoulari that started me and several friends off as collectors. I've got it off a download but a good quality transfer would be great.
Ricci Sarasate spanish dances with Brooks Smith
          Tibor Varga Nielsen violin concerto
          Kremer Ysaye solo sonatas
Gimpel Lalo Symphonie Espagnole (his Wieniawski has finally surfaced on Muza so there is a god after all!)

Finally, more of Oistrakh's early recordings that I haven't even got on LP.

And yet the same stuff gets repackaged and reissued year after year!

This set seemed to pass me by....does anyone have any thoughts on how well it ranks amongst other HIP versions? I'd be grateful for any advice.

Nothing rank about the Krivine set. Why do you think the original pressing sold out so fast?

Do not hesitate. It's very fine indeed.

I had no idea it was such a huge success...did it get much of a mention in the UK when it came out?

Well, here's what a certain Rob Cowan had to say about them:

And on these very boards there are comments such as:

Thanks Bryn, this all escaped my gaze at the time. Oh dear, more expense!

If you want check out a later set of performances by Krivine and the band, I think they are still on YouTube. Just search for "Beethoven Krivine" and select the full symphony offerings.

The LCP / Krivine cycle, as well as the equally good (imv) Anima Eterna / Immerseel cycle, can both be listened to on Spotify, or via the Naxos Music Library link if you don't use Spotify.

Krivine's performances may alternatively be seen on YouTube, in good vision and sound (for YouTube). I have certainly enjoyed them hugely.
