I never realised this excellent set had been deleted.

I had the great good fortune to note a brand new copy of the Collins Classical issue standing on display at the till end of the counter in Schott Music a couple of years or so ago. On enquiring after the price, there was a little confusion as it was not to be found on their system, so I was eventually charged £10. It was thought, at the time, to be down for a reissue on NMC in the then near future. One can but hope. Since it was "Produced in association with BBC Radio 3", perhaps they will rebroadcast it some day?

Yes; alongside along with the film of the first production (with the original ending to Act One) that was originally shown on BBC2. dixie!

(PS: yes, "great good fortune", indeed!)

Coincidentally, I viewed, yesterday, an off-air DVD (transferred from video) of the BBC 2, 1991, transmission of "Gawain" from Covent Garden and was quite charmed to see the 'Stereo' imprint on the BBC logo. Apparently, this was the first work by Birtwistle to bear the title 'opera'; despite the occasional longueur due to repetition, this remains a colossal work and, although clearly enunciated, the recording has the merit of David Harsent's libretto as subtitles. Some of the alliterations he uses are a joy to savour! In particular, John Tomlinson was in his prime during this era and his presence is always distinguished. The opera was introduced by Jeremy Isaacs - a reminder as to how these things should be done.

Are we likely to see productions of "The Mask of Orpheus" or "Gawain" for HB's 80th birthday in 2014?

My own videotape is much worn through many playings, Stanley: it'd be great to have an "official" DVD release.

Probably not "likely", but I'm ever hopeful!

Complete operas with Elena Souliotis have been out of the catalogue for too long, in particular:
                      - Norma with Mario Del Monaco and Fiorenza Cossotto - they may think they're singing Verdi not Bellini but it's stirring stuff
                      - Anna Bolena with Marilyn Horne and the under-recorded firm as a rock John Alexander
                      - Macbeth with Dietrich Fischer Dieskau and a young Pavarotti as Macduff under Gardelli - powerful and dark stuff

There is also the infamous Anna Moffo Thais with Baquier and Carreras. Having heard snatches on youtube it doesn't seem THAT bad. Would love to hear it in its entirety.

Finally, as I have said before on these threads please EMI can we have the Klemperer Nozze Di Figaro with Geraint Evans, Reri Grist, Elisabeth Soderstrom, Gabriel Baquier and Teresa Berganza.

Finally, finally Shirley Verrett made a Vivaldi album inc. the Stabat Mater and Credo which I have on lp and have yet to source on CD.

Some Beethoven Symphonies (Decca) conducted by Monteux are not always easy to find. Currently 1,3, 6 and 8 are available new (the VPO recordings) - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000422R/...890_pe_vfe_dt1
while 2, 4, 5 and 7 (the LSO recordings) are hard to find, and may only be available second hand - or at much higher prices - http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Symp...ref=pd_sim_m_1.

The Ninth (also with the LSO) is currently available - http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Symp...ref=pd_sim_m_3

I'm interested in acquiring Östman's Die Zauberflöte. It appears to have been re-released in February of this year thusly. However, the previous re-release on Decca was without libretto, so I'm wandering whether it's worth buying a second-hand version of the original release, including the libretto. The risk being that the sound will have been polished up on the re-releases.

Any advice on which to plump for?

It appears that a multilingual libretto for the latest re-issue is available online:

hmv.com have it listed at £10 with 'free' p&p.

Thanks, Bryn. Good to know. Unfortunately, living in France I can't take advantage of all those jolly Sainsbury's and HMV offers.

I'm in the same situation, Thropplenoggin. As another resident in France, I just wish I had a spare copy of the old Ostman set to pass on to you...I guard mine preciously!
