    Jurowski Tchaikovsky 4

A totally absorbing performance on a 2CD set on the LPO label coupled with the
    Fifth symphony.

No emotional overload, no playing to the gallery. An uncommonly dark and
chilly orchestral sound, the folksy melodies often plain and unsmiling.

Five auditions already since Friday - I don't normally get this infatuated anymore.

Ok, so we never hear a bad performance of the Fourth, though RO/Batiz tried pretty hard
last Tuesday, yet this is something quite special. Even if not super exciting as such, this is one of those
lovely recordings that invites you back time after time. Life enhancing stuff.

It's about time I shrugged off my lazy concert going tendencies to go see/hear this guy.

I can't move on to the 5th just yet !

You should also buy his Manfred LPO recording. He did a fine performance at the Proms, which of course had the advantage of the Albert Hall organ, but his Festival Hall recording is just as authoritative.

I have yet to be disappointed with any concert that Jurowski has conducted.

Yes, I have that Manfred. The Proms performance was a highlight of the season.

Vlad comes up with some pretty original programmes too. Altogether a most intelligent and musical chap - and not bad looking either !

Thanks for the alert, Alison. This set will be down on my Christmas wish list.

I can only judge from recordings, but Vladimir (who first came to international attention at the Wexford Festival in 1995) has consistently impressed me, going back to his days with the Russian National Orchestra on Pentatone.

I understand his father Michail is equally fine, but I found his brother Dmitri desperately disappointing when he conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland a few years ago.

Thanks to Alison's enthusiastic recommendation, I too will take the plunge and add this new release to my collection.

I cannot comment in detail at present, Alison, as I'm reviewing this set, but I think you'll be even more impressed with the Fifth.

On a number of occasions at the RFH, Vladimir Jurowski has given a public interview after the concert to discuss the evening's music. He is a wonderfully lucid and entertaining interviewee, completely free of waffle and obviously a man of deep understanding.

I agree entirely about Jurowski's musicianship, Ferret but I've not caught any of his post-concert interviews - are these only for the select few or can riff-raff like me attend?

It has been good to come to this set without seeing any reviews.

I could imagine the Fourth not being to everyone's taste. There is certainly no applied superficial excitement of the sort espoused by Enrique Batiz last Tuesday. Nor do we get that sort of sweetish English sound recalled from the LPO under Rostropovich.

The Fifth is now even more eagerly anticipated!

They take the form of an interview on the ballroom level, and are open to all comers.

I managed to fix for my godson to sing the treble solo in VJ's "Klagende Lied" with the LPO in January last year. I went along to his audition at the Henry Wood Hall one lunchtime, with VJ in his civvies and pony-tail at the piano - it turned into a mini-rehearsal he decided to hire said sprog immediately. He was laid-back, musicianly, kind &c &c throughout and subsequently in rehearsals. A gent and a scholar

                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
