    I think that's a wonderful version, Petrushka.

I remember hearing a superb broadcast performance with IIRC Salvatore Accardo and Cecil Aronowitz as the soloists (can't recall the orchestra/conductor) a long time back but I'm not sure if they ever recorded it.

My personal favourite is David Oistrakh with Barshai. Oistrakh was in his fabulous prime in the 1950s and fine as his viola playing was, I love his reading of the violin part. Barshai was excellent too!

Perlman and Zukermann don't generate the magic for me, nor Grumiaux (a real favourite).

See my msg. no.7.... I would put Bruggen/Zehetmair etc. or Abbado/Carmignola etc. (both HIP-style performances - "HI-Performance" perhaps...?) above any of the older recordings, save perhaps for the Szell - but that's a recording miracle which, while you hear it, seems to be unsurpassable. It even makes Davis' LSO sound overblown. Just listen to how Szell prepares for the entry of his soloists - both Cleveland principals - the blend, the phrase, the timing - so lovely, as if sung by the tongues of angels. One listens - one slowly shakes the head in wonder.

I'm reminded of Rattle saying about Szell and the Clevelanders, "ah yes, a conductor and orchestra who actually believed that perfection was possible"!

As an ever-receding goal perhaps? Well, that event-horizon was pretty close in Severance on 28th December 1963.

Lots of excellent versions of this around; one of my oft-returned to listenings is Augustin Dumay and Gérard Caussé with Sinfonia Varsovia directed by Emmanuel Krivine on EMI.

A question; Oistrakh and Barshai - what label is it on - sounds interesting? Thanks.

I have the wonderful Janaceks from 1963 on an ancient Supraphon LP (that I've owned and played for 40+ years).

And I have the Lindsays, whom I heard play these great quartets live on several occasions, on cassette, which I no longer have a means of playing.

So I'm very much in the market!

Very sorry. Should have been on the Janacek quatets thread.

Szell, Bruggen, Abbado/OM,... no-one else heard these at all? I'd LOVE a second opinion...!

Or I might just give up (to a chorus of cheers).

No sorry - but to throw in another I have a rather rough and ready recording of Britten with the two principals from the Amadeus Quartet - but marvellously spirited .

I learned these great piece via a recording featuring Issac Stern and William Primrose accompanied by (I think) Ormandy and the Philadelphia
Orchestra. It wouldn't pass the Historically Informed Practice test but it made a lot of the slow movement. My current listening is split between a DG disc featuring the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (two oftheir principals playing the solo parts) and the SACD Julia Fischer/Nikalovic disc. The latter has great sonics but sounds just a bit to glib.

Just checked on eBay. The Stern recording was probably with Primrose and the LSO, with Stern listed as the conductor. I haven't heard it in years

                        Jayne,

If that's Szell's with Rafael Druian (violin) and Abraham Skernick (viola) then my second opinion is that it is a damn good listen! The other stuff on the CD is pretty good too! Ten out of ten, all round.

Sorry, what sloppy writing, Gruimiaux's a favourite player, particularly in classical repertoire, but his Sinfonia doesn't work for me.

I originally found it on LP on the Artia label. Later I found it on CD in the US on a label called Sterling Classics coupled with the Brahms Double. Luckily I bought partner disc of the Prokofiev (1) and Stravinsky concerti because the CDs were wrongly labelled; the CD labelled Mozart and Brahms actually contained the Stravinsky and Prokofiev and vice versa!

I must admit to not understanding anyone finding Perlman/Zukerman to be anything other than a delight. There is no sense that it is sentimental or too slow . It is hardly a fault that they play so beautifully and with unmatched interplay . I do not like hair shirt Mozart which I do not equate with HIPP Mozart - for example Lisa Beznosiuk's Flute Concertos are probably my favourite of all.

I have struggled with Abbado's recent Mozart symphonies for example- for me they are too aggressive and unyielding.
