There is also this HIP version to consider, with Stephanie Chase, Roger Chase, The Hanover Band under Roy Goodman...I never got hold of a copy so cannot comment on the performances.

Buy Mozart - Orchestral Works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Roy Goodman, Hanover Band from Amazon's Classical Music Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders.

You're very welcome...and you have whetted my appetite as I already have the same forces in the Beethoven Violin Concerto/Romances, also for Cala.

... thanks, Micky! - As there was a used copy on amazon going for £1.98 I have gone for it. It will be a useful contrast to the Gil Shahan : Yuri Gandelsman / Amati and the Midori : Nobuko Imai / NDR Sinfonieorchester currently on the shelves.

Good for you, Vints! I should get hold of it too as I realise I don't have any version at all of this piece, which I find incredible! Let us know what you think when it arrives...Thropplenoggin seems to hold it in high esteem.

Any recommendations (CD) for an update on this thread please? (I haven't been able to find a BAL thread.)

I'd suggest you can't go wrong with either of these:

If you want a HIPP recording and can find a copy the Huggett/Beznosiuk is very good. For a recent modetn instrument but modern in style account Vilde Frang /Rysanek with Arcangelo and Cohen is excellent.

As discussed on that other thread.

K 364 from Stavanger, oil capital of Norway, was the first item in TTN on 24 Jan. There are seven more days to listen to the two 28-year-olds having a Mozartian conversation, accompanied by the local SO:

Guro Kleven Hagen & Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad / Stavanger Symfoniorkester / Arvid Engegård.

(My wife grew up there (7-17) and was delighted to be able to listen to one of her favourite concertos from her second home town. Oil money has provided handsomely for the city's cultural and educational assets.)

The performance we often used to play in the car was recorded from R3 onto cassette: The Moscow Virtuosi directed by founder (1979) Vladimir Spivakov, violin with Yuri Bashmet, viola. I heard them play it on the South Bank (QEH?) in the '80s and these two also made commercial recordings with the ECO for EMI, and Spivakov for RCA with his MV and Shlomo Mintz, viola. Today, their virtuosic approach to the music seems way out of fashion. They make some beautiful sounds, especially in (ii), but too much emphasis is placed on precision and the conversaton becomes po-faced. The finale is a bit of a scramble. YT reveals contrasting hairstyles but doesn't show them smiling much: https://youtu.be/9wC_WqLPQqc

Thanks for all comments. I want to give this as a gift to someone who is learning both viollin and viola, so I thought it would be appropriate. I find I don't own this work, so I'll probaby buy two copies of one of the recomendations.

I was thinking that an old HMV Concert Classics LP of the Brainin Schidlof with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra that I had was very good - on checking I find that the Amadeus players have recorded it three times - earlier with LMP and Harry Blech and later with SNO and Gibson!

Actually, I’m sure the Gibson recording was with the English Chamber Orchestra, not the (R)SNO. Sir Alex made a few recordings with them for Chandon before his death.

Yes you are correct - I think I was on automatic.
