And so am I fond of it, though with lingering thoughts that it's not a great work however well it's played. Perhaps Joachim was right. I thought I'd borrow a copy of this new release as I'd not listened to the work for a good while.
A "startlingly quick finale" is what this piece needs I think - Marwood and Boyd seem agreed that the marked tempo should be slower than many take it, but the music just struggles to survive and sounds tired and laboured. The rest of the disc is no better.
I agree with PJPJ on this - Kremer and Harnoncourt's slow finale is also a struggle though Kremer's playing has much more character . Kremer and Muti are much better and Menuhin and Barbirolli on Naxos fizz through it .
Evidently not . I see that Jessica Duchen in BBCMM did not like the performance either and describes the first and third movements absolutely rightly as leaden .
This is the first ever CD I have returned on the basis of the poor quality of the performance rather than a fault . Thanks Amazon for taking it back.
