        I agree with (almost) all the recommendations above.

        And, gradus, if Terfel isn't a popular choice in this repertory then he jolly well should be!

        One name, I think not mentioned yet, is Mitsuko Shirai. Wonderful in just about everything but supreme, to my ears, in Auf einer burg (Schumann Liederkreis, 39) and in Schubert Nacht und Traume (sorry, haven't sorted accents yet).

          Coincidence that we both chose Auf einer Burg as an example of the prowess of our favourites; it is such an atmospheric and beautfiul poem/song.

            I agree with you about Terfel. Do you know the Shirai? If not then do try to hear it - I can almost give you a written guarantee that you'll love it!

              My favourite ever lieder recitals are both very recent acquisitions. Husch singing Winterreise and Schiotz singing Schone Mullerin. Beautiful, beautiful singing.
