    Favourite lieder recitals?

I have recently started listening seriously to the lieder of Hugo Wolf, having always liked Schubert lieder. This in turn has led me to look into Schumann's songs as well.

I'd be interested to hear what you regard as prized lieder recitals/boxes (Wolf, Schubert or Schumann) in your collections.

I find DFD somewhat overpowering in large doses.

An "essential" is Schwarzkopf with Furtwangler at the piano in Wolf, live at Salzburg.

Schumann's Dichterliebe sung by Olaf Baer (the R3 live broadcast in preference to the studio recording) or Ian Partridge (if only because his recording was my first encounter with the work - and you know how it is with first encounters!).
Wagner: Wesendonck lieder (Flagstad or Norman)
Strauss: Four Last Songs (Janowitz or Popp)

I also have, and prize, the Schwarzkopf/Furtwängler Wolf recital, and the Partridges in Dichterliebe. I would add:

Partridges in Die Schöne Müllerin and Schumann's Liederkreis op 39
Margaret Price and Graham Johnson in Schumann's Liederkreis op 39 and Kerner Lieder
Margaret Price and James Lockhardt in Frauenliebe und Leben
Britten and Pears in Die Winterreise
Schwarzkopf and Edwin Fischer in a selection of Schubert lieder
Schwarzkopf and Walter Gieseking in a selection of Mozart lieder
Wunderlich and Giesen in Beethoven An die ferne Geliebte

Of all the song cycles, Die Winterreise seems to be the most difficult to bring off and I don't know of any version that is completely convincing.

Winterreise left me cold (appropriately!) until I saw the filmed version with Bostridge and Drake on television. Dumbed down to get people like me to like it? - If it was, it worked in my case.

                Perhaps I might add:

                Margaret Price singing Liszt.

I don't know much about Schumann or Wolf here - but for Schubert I wouldn't be without : -

Winterreise / Schöne Müllerin / Schwanengesang - Prégardien / Staier
                  Winterreise / Schwanengesang - Hotter / Moore
Schöne Müllerin / Wünderlich / Giesen

                  - and, of course, Fischer-Dieskau/Moore, often...

Here's a random clutch of favourites from a very large collection:

Winterreise - Peter Anders, Michael Raucheisen (rec. Berlin March 1945 with Russian tanks approaching)
Schubert - Bernarda Fink, Gerold Huber
Melancholie : Lieder Von Robert Schumann Christian Gerhaher, Gerold Huber
Schöne Müllerin - Fischer-Dieskau Moore (my first Lieder purchase as a student over 40 years ago)
Brahms - Bernada Fink, Roger Vignoles
Brahms - Olaf Bär, Geoffrey Parsons
Strauss, R - Jonas Kaufmann, Helmut Deutsch
Strauss - Lieder Lisa Della Casa, Arpád Sandor
Vier Letzte Lieder - Lisa Della Casa, Karl Böhm (another recording I've lived with for over 40 years)
Frauenliebe und -leben - Janet Baker, Martin Isepp
Dichterliebe - Peter Schreier, Andras Schiff (70th birthday recital)
Dichterliebe - Fritz Wunderlich, Hubert Giesen
Wolf Goethe Lieder - F-D, Moore
A marvellous novelty is Winterreise from Christoph Prégardien with the wind band Pentaèdre http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Atma/ACD22546
Wolf Lieder - Hans Hotter, Gerald Moore http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wolf-Lieder-...4673181&sr=8-1

PS I love Karl Erb http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...G7QP8PQXA9CZAE

Not I think a popular choice but I like Bryn Terfel in his DG Schumann disc. For example, Auf einer Burg is wonderfully sung with subtly expressive playing by Malcolm Martineau.
I share many of the choices earlier in the thread to which I would add Janet Baker in Frauenliebe und Leben recorded live at Snape.

If this were BAL my top choice would be Mahler (Baker, Halle/NPO, Barbirolli). As it's not I'll also include:

                        Beethoven (Genz, Vignoles)
                        Brahms (Kirchschlager, Johnson)
                        Mahler (Gerhaher, Huber)
Schubert - Die Schone Mullerin (Fischer-Dieskau, Moore)
                        Schubert - Winterreise (Fischer-Dieskau, Demus)
                        Schubert (Baker, Moore)
Strauss - Four Last Songs, etc (Schwarzkopf, Szell).

                          Three of my favourites:
'Barbara Bonney sings Schubert' with Geoffrey Parsons
Mahler/Lieberson etc. - Lorraine Hunt Lieberson/Roger Vignoles on Wigmore Hall Live
Dichterliebe - Maltmann/Johnson in the Hyperion Complete Schumann Song Collection

I treasure a DHM CD of Schubert and Schumann lieder recorded back in the 60s by Elly Ameling, accompanied by Jorg Demus on an exquisite sounding fortepiano.
