I was rather taken with the Schubert Ensemble's recording of the P Quartet no 2 played on CD Review on Saturday 11 August. But before I take the plunge, are there any other recordings I should consider? Come on, all you Dvorak chamber music buffs!

Why not invest in the Brilliant Classics box set (92181) of Dvorak chamber works, which has some pretty good performances of these works?

This probably won't be a terribly popular suggestion, but if you want the Rolls-Royce with cream on top...
The Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm (mdg gold) disc of the Leipzig Quartet with Christian Zacharias, which has the Op.81 Piano Quintet c/w the Op. 97 String Quintet, is almost unsurpassably lovely, both musically and sonically. You simply won't hear a better chamber-music recording. (mdg 307 1249-2).
The DG Original Masters box of the Janacek Quartet's gorgeously slav and lovable recordings includes 5 Dvorak String Quartets (opp. 34, 51, 96 & 105) and another great Op.81., along with highly individual, characterful performances of Janacek, Smetana, Brahms and Beethoven etc. Highly recommended - the "American" is especially swinging!

Sorry to keep cheering on my own team here, but I played the Janacek Quartet's (with Eva Bernathova) Op. 81 last night/this morning... oh what a shame it would be if a true lover of Dvorak Chamber Music never heard this... think of Beecham's Delius, Bernstein in New York with Ives or Copland... THIS is what "idiomatic" means. And I'm going to play it again on the way to bed tonight.
If budget allows, ditch the bargain box and just get the DG Janacek Qt. set and the mdg!
(Or just get everything...)

I agree with all the recommendations, especially the Janacek Quartet set, although I have yet to try the MDG disc. There is also another budget priced set from Supraphon (SU 3921-2) which includes the Piano Quartets, Piano Quintets, String Quintets and Sextet, with the Panocha Quartet as the main participants. I always feel that the Czech groups bring something rather special to this repertoire.

I love the Talich Quartet's recordings of the last four quartets plus the piano quintet and string quintet. No piano quartets unfortunately but wonderful playing, especially in the op 105 and op 106 quartets. This was the box I got some years back for under £15 IIRC but now at silly prices on Amazon:
Hopefully it is available more cheaply elsewhere.

I too fully endorse the choice of the Leipzig and Janacek Quartets with their respective pianists; the former give a highly seductive performance of op. 81, beautifully recorded. The Janacek box is a treasure trove of superb chamber music making, including what is unquestionably my favourite Haydn quartet disc, comprising op. 33 no. 2, op. 76 no. 2, and the Hofstetter op. 3 no. 5. - I defy you to listen to this disc and not feel uplifted at the end, whatever the state of the weather or the economy.
