There's a very good slightly under characterised but beautifully played Haitink one with the Concertgebouw which I've listened to a lot, but it doesn't reach as far inside the piece as either of the above, IMO. I have yet to hear Uncle Bernie's 2011 're-make' which has been much praised. In fact your question may prompt me to remedy thatComment

That's true. I think Thomas is talking about the 4th (his comment about the earlier Haitink having been with the LPO applies equally to the 4th as it does about the 15th which is how I took it!

Yes the fourth. Sorry, are you talking about No 15? I´ve missed that completely. So let me star anew, and when it comes to No 15 I absolutely love the LPO version and, as has been said before, it is only bettered by the Concertgebouw recording on RCO Live. So sorry for mixing it all up. I will read more carefully in the future.Comment

Apology unneccesary, Thomas - I did wonder when Anton mentioned "Shostakovich's last and best Symphony" if he was making a barbed comment about the quality of Nos 5-15!
Totally agree with your comments - and I had forgotten/was unaware that Haitink had re-recorded the Fourth on the CSO label!
