Stanford Symphony No. 3

After receiving good advice about the symphonies of Parry, I decided to
try Stanford as well. I recently bought this CD, and have found it to be
very enjoyable. I'm not a musicologist, so I'll limit myself to pointing out
there there are some memorable tunes in the piece.

It came from one of the independents via Amazon, but I'm afraid I can't
remember which one.

The Chandos set of the complete symphonies has been an essential part of my collection for years.
I'm not a musicologist and don't know whether or not these works are masterpieces.
However they all contain memorable tunes to my ears and I couldn't imagine being without them.
Then there are his wonderful concertos and chamber music too.

You've certainly started with the right one - said to have been the most often played British symphony in the 20-or-so years before Elgar's 1st. Each movement has a high degree of tunefulness (including folk tunes in the last movement). The other symphonies are enjoyable, too, but I do feel the Third is specially so (even if the ending goes a little over the top).

Neither Handley nor del Mar (EMI) observes the exposition repeat in the first movement, though.

Stanford's Irish was programmed for the very first concert given by the Concertgebouw orchestra following its opening concert in 1888. "First performance in the Netherlands" the programme sheet proudly states.

The Chan dos series are veryoood to investigating the whoole canon!! His chamber music is very worthwile too!!

Just thinking. Re the Parry and Stanford Nonets. There's Bax's glorious Nonet! Either on Chandos or Hyperion both recor4dings are worth havbing!
