Handel Water Music

I shall firmly nail my colours to the mast of the 1964 Menuhin recording with Pinnock as my HIPP choice

    What is your favourite ?

I'll second that, especially in its SACD incarnation

Seconded for HIPP, with ASMIF/Marriner for a "traditional" performance

I would like to hear the Niquet, but I also very much enjoy the recent version from Mark Minkowski and his Musiciens du Louvre on Naive.

Looks like the superb Hervé Niquet conducting Le Concert Spirituel, Bbm; a recording I didn't previously know about. I have difficulty reading the label: GLOSSA?

(I'm very fond of Jordi Savall's recording.)

Here you go - Niquet & his Concert Spirituel on Glossa.

Expensive though - nearly 20 quid! SACD...?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                          Or, using Hafod's Spanish discovery

which, even with postage, is cheaper. I have the same recording in a pre-SACD 2-channel issue, also from Glossa, as well as the above version.

Another vote for Robert King 's Handel/Telemann recording now at bargian price on Helios.

On a cold January day in 1989, two dozen oboes, twelve bassoons, nine horns, nine trumpets and two giant double drums were gathered in a north London church to make what became of Hyperion’s most iconic recordings: The King’s Consort’s recreation of Handel’s Musick for the Royal Fireworks is a sonic triumph of jaw-dropping majesty, its authenticity only stopping short at burning down the venue.

Ten years later Robert King and The King’s Consort turned their attentions to the Water Music. Handel’s commission was for an enormous party on the river Thames given by George I. A large orchestra was present on the musicians' barge: a good-size string section (despite the King’s outspoken loathing of ‘violeens’) and a substantial wind presence. The sound of a large baroque wind band produces a magnificent sonority. Similarly, a colourful continuo force on the river seems probable. The rhythmic impetus of a pair of baroque guitars combined with the colours of two harpsichords lends the music a vital danceband-like rhythm section, much in keeping with the King’s colourful intentions for his evening’s entertainment!

All faithfully recreated, of course. Except for the barge.

Jordi Savall's is good. It's a pity his concert peformances can, as for exampe the one broadcast from 2009 Edinburgh Festival, seem as if he's pressed the fast forward button, taking everything at breakneck speed.

I've only heard bits of the 2-channel version of the Hervé Niquet recording. Don't forget his 2012 Prom:

Handel’s resplendent Water Music suites and Music for the Royal Fireworks get an upsized French period-instrument treatment.

With 80 musicians, it should be a blast.
