Yes, but correct me if I'm wrong, there were 4LPs and the content of all these has not yet appeared on CD.

Yes. He did express a wistful regret occasionally at not conducting more opera. (He gave the first British performance of Wosseck, but in concert). He was usually most phlegmatic about 'what might have been' - such as taking over the Boston Symphony - saying that he had done just what he had wanted to do as a boy, conduct orchestras.

You are right about there having been four LPs. They contained a total of 23 pieces, which all appeared on three CDs: CDM 7 63120 2; CDM 7 63121 2; and CDM 63122 2. The linked discs I referred you to contain only 18 pieces (sorry - I didn't notice), but the older CDs are available from private sellers.

The first of the Wagner sessions was with the NPO on 22 and 23 December 1971. The second were with the LPO on 13-14 December 1972. The third, with the LSO, were on 23, 29 and 30 January 1973 (Siegfried Idyll and Parsifal excerpts). The last sessions were with the LPO on 14, 15 and 19 January 1974. All were at Abbey Rd, No. 1 studio.

He recorded the Wesendonck Lieder with Jant Baker in June 1975, but that was never issued with these records.

The Wesendonk Lieder were available on a very generous HMV Classics CD with Baker's marvellous Berlioz Nuits D'Ete and Ravl Sheherazade - I imagine there will be second hand copies about.

The New Philharmonia performances in the original LP were was issued in SQ Quadraphonic. These were the Meistersinger and Lohengrin excerpts, the Tristan Prelude and the Tannhauser Overture. This raises the question, do they remix the quad masters for stereo release on CD, or were there always stereo masters as well as quad tapes?

I still play quad LPs through my Meridian surround system, although it does not have an SQ option. Most of these discs were issued as compatible, which simply meant that rear channel information was reduced, and in any case SQ suffered from lots of disadvantages with loss of separation due to the simple matrix it used. Some of the EMI recordings in quad have appeared on SACD, but I haven't got SACD, so I don't know how effective they are. Perhaps somebody can shed a little light?

Please note that the works on this Puccini CD are all original and complete, and from the earliest score on this CD very recognizable Puccini. The original release was one of my very first CDs anyway

The masters are (analogue) multitrack recordings, and therefore can be mixed as required.

Surely a great candidate for an EMI 3CD set!

I recently ordered some bleeding chunks of Wagner from America via Amazon, a Mercury recording by the Detroit SO and Paul Paray. I have been steadily acquiring all the Mercury discs that were available on CD, and this was the last and most elusive on my list.

It arrived this morning, and I opened it eagerly, only to find a disc labelled " Luxury you can Afford" featuring Joe Cocker !

I have emailed the sender pointing out that this is a luxury I cannot afford, but have yet to get a reply!

This is the first time that this has happened to me when ordering online.

I think this is rather a shame . There has been some great Wagner conducting of bleeding chunks - Boult's 1970s recordings come to mind and without bleeding chunks how are novices going to get to know his music ?
Obviously changing taste has a great deal to do with their absence from concerts, but I wonder if the shrinkage in concert length has also contributed. Most orchestral concerts now have a single symphony in the second half, with perhaps a very short additional piece if the symphony is less than half an hour. I think concerts in the past were rather longer, with more room for a variety of pieces.
