Bargain ! Bargain!

I went to HMV in Oxford Street today, to return a DVD, and was if course tempted to go downstairs, where I discovered an EMI Collector's Edition of Mozart, 50 CDs for £10!
I've got some duplicates, but even so -- Piano Concertos / Barenboim/ Symphonies / ECO / Tate, Piano Sonatas / Barenboim, String Quintets / Heutling Quartet, Violin Concertos / Oistrakh, and four operas. These are the Krips Entfuhrung, Figaro and Don Giovanni with Barenboim, Cosi with Haitink, and the Flute with Sawallisch.

There's a lot more besides, and even if not evcerything is a top recommendation, I'm going to enjoy finding out!

Perhaps I should wait until February after the R3 Mozart blitz!

That box was bargain enough at around £40. FOr a tenner it's an absolute must.

Amazon have had the the Beethoven box for some while now for £19.99 although it is currently out of stock.

I'll be in London tomorrow - not especially close to Oxford Street, but could manage a quick visit if suitably tempted I used to make a point of visiting the Oxford Circus HMV for its post-Christmas sale every year, but must admit to finding the past couple rather disappointing.

So, apart from this Mozart box, is the sale worth the detour this year?

I popped into the Oxford Circus HMV this afternoon and found not only the 50 disc EMI Mozart set, but the Beethoven one too, the highlight of which is, for me, the Cluytens symphonies and overtures, though there are plenty of other fine recordings in the box. Again, it was but £10. I got one of each as 'come in handy' presents for friends getting into 'classical' music. Also got a DVD of Haydn's The Creation (Hogwood). The only other thing (I pick the term with some care) I got was a disc of Evelyn Glennie playing some rubbish percussion concerto with a fancy religious title by some Scottish hack composer or other. That was only £3 and I might give it to somebody who annoys me enough.

Bit of a wasted journey, really. Still, it was all done on my Womble Pass and I did listen to last May 22nd's Hear & Now again on the way up to London, and dozed most of the way back.

I was tempted too, so popped back today for the Beethoven. Again, one or two duplicates including the Cluytens symphonies, but now I can replace a few LPs and enjoy the Hungarian Quartet and others.

Yes, I have the Mozart box which I got for £15 a few months back when our local Past Times closed down (I also got Handley's RVW box for £8). Some repeats (Oistrakh VC) but glad I now have these versions of the operas, and have filled a lot of gaps in the chamber music and piano concerti (Barenboim). The symphonies (Tate) are pretty good though I dip into some Britten (ECO) and Mackerras (PCO, SCO) quite often.
