What? You've never heard of Harry Adneov Naxos? His Strauss recording are highly prized!

(OR - if you prefer - Ooops! and with apologies to Mr Steinberg!)

How right you are about the ' lying in a darkened room ' bit Richard - but not because of this thread, rather the effects of the excellent beer festival I went to yesterday !

Many thanks to all for the usual variety of informative and entertaining responses. I have obtained cheap s/h copies of the old ENO guide to DFH which includes the libretto and the Naxos recording ( but I am sure I will also explore others ), so when ' Old Thumper ' finally stops doing a sabre dance in my head I will have a listen , but probably not today !

Oh and with regard to Mr Rieu, I will not be going down that route - I already have far too may sugary and syrupy products in the house as it is !

Dear AmpH, well done on the beer festival, good to see that some people understand priorities!

May I humbly suggest that Mr Mandryka has hit the nail on the head and given the best possible advice; If you want to begin listening to Wagner operas, forget DFH, go for Das Rheingold.

Not at all sure about this advice:
          1) it's surely a bit presumptuous and dangerous to tell someone who's already made his own choice to desist and try something 'better';
          2) the 'numbers' are shorter in FD, you get dances which as far as I can recall you don't in Walkure, a lot happens, it's a free-standing and reasonably well-known story, it features ordinary people in a real historical environment (plus one or two admittedly a bit odd). I vote firmly for FD as the best 'Timid Soul's Approach to Dick Carter'!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

A wonderful performance, great soloists and chorus (what more can you ask for!?) I was surprised that singing it in English did not detract from it in the slightest.

I did not understand the stage-setting and props, but that says more about me than production values!

Yeah, on reflection, my advice was dangerous. I was presuming. That's not too bad in itself, but I draw the line at danger. I do hope he's ok.

Dutchman was my first live Wagner (1972, ROH Schmidt-Isserstedt) which was enough to make me want to hear more. My second, at the other extreme, was a Goodall Siegfried at the ENO......

It was a last minute offer. An amazing experience - Hunter and Remedios unforgettable - but not having seen the first two in the cycle, or listened or done any proper preparation, I have to say in retrospect that in all honesty I was not quite ready for it...I had not got significantly past the bleedin' chunks stage then. Well we all have to start somewhere, it was 40 years ago......

No problems here ...... just getting to grips with DFH ...... have also acquired very cheap copy of Ring cycle ( EMI Sawallisch ) ...... bit of a rollercoaster this Wagner thing

Mr Mandryka! I do hope that this is not an old Reggie-cide that you're trying to resurrect here!

I would classify myself as a Goodall-sceptic, but I think it's time to lay off him for his politics.

I once purchased highlights from the RG Ring as an impluse buy (positioned by the counter in HMV). Some of the singing was shockingly poor.

Agree about politics. Where do we stop? If we're going to chuck out RG then we need to get rid of Karajan and (particularly) Bohm. And that's without getting started on all the Soviet sympathisers, those with illegal sexual preferences etc
