    I understood this was a one-movement work

      Eine Alpensinfonie,

It's in four movements, merged seamlessly.

Although, for some reason, the Mravinsky is split into 5 tracks on the CD. Karajan and Davis are on four separate tracks. D is a single track which is why there is a fraction of the second movement at the end. I had to use a wav editor to extract the first movement.

Well, yes, but it's so seamless that it isn't possible to be able to say "the first movement ends here", though some CDs do indeed make the attempt.

          Ok, ignore my last post!

I typed 'Sibelius symphony 7' into a search box and this popped up!

I have no idea where I came up with the idea that the 7th was in four parts, other than a vague memory of an R3 program many years ago.

                  Oh, the temptation.

Yes Basil, the clue was a giveaway but I did play the disc to check. I can't believe that I didn't think of it before as AG was a good friend and I first learned the Sibelius symphonies from his performances.

It's not supposed to be in 4 mvts although you can identify the 4 sections in it. No more than mvt 1 of no.5 isn't 2 mvts.

I'm a huge fan of his, I still have two chandos LPs of the 2nd, 3rd and 6th symphonies.

Do you know if he recorded the Violin concerto?

No, he never did record the Violin Concerto although I heard him perform it many times with, among others, Szeryng and Haendel.

Thanks, by the way, for providing this blind listening selection. It's a fascinating exercise and much appreciated.

That's a shame, I'm not sure if it's just me, but good recordings of the violin concerto seem to be very few and far between.

You're welcome, if no one else puts another up in the next week or so, I have another in mind re: my comments on the Violin concerto, I have 5 versions of that, or I could do a Mozart one?*

                              *joke!

Seconded. And well done Curalach for nailing Gibson. Would never have guessed. I'm still ashamed I didn't spot Mravinsky, that no.1 certainly sounds a lot cleaner from the point of view of audience obligato and woodwind intonation than my trusty Meloydia LP. And apologies for 'giving the game away' in #2 - I thought it was a competition
