The one with 'Tea in the Sahara' on it (and the rather more popular 'Every Breath You take'). This album even won the admiration of that wonderful writer on music of catholic tastes, Wilfrid Mellers.

Yes, Synchronicity... the first and the last Police or Sting album I ever bought. Inspired to the purchase by Every Breath, I was disappointed in the album, rather lost touch with all three musicians after that. For me they were a great singles band of the late/early eighties... (rather better lyrics than Duran Duran...)

I haven't heard The Soldier's Tale, but I'd imagine his voice would be well-suited to the role.

I need to re-listen to this album (Ghosts in the Machine). I always thought it was extremely poor (I bought it when it first came out), but the views expressed here mean I must reconsider.

My favourite Sting album is a close call between The Dream of the Blue Turtles and Synchronicity.

I always felt Synchronicity was spoilt by Stewart Copeland's ranting on "Mother" - the piece seemed at odds with the rest of the album. At the time, I had no idea he was such an accomplished musician and thought he was a dumb drummer with hang-ups. At any rate, its crudely revealed emotional raw material is scarcely transmuted into art, is it? And on LP, it was harder to avoid!

Agreed. And yes, Mother was more of an issue on LP! A real duff track that is easy to skip on cd these days.
