In the 1990s Chandos effectively took over from Decca as the label with the most impressive sound. However, the producers had different priorities. Although both produced recordings with superb clarity, Decca rarely produced recordings with solo singers sounding as though they were so close that they were sitting on the listener's knee. Chandos, however, have sometimes made this mistake. I cite the Hickox recording of Elgar's The Apostles as a example. In many ways, this is a superb performance and recording, but is marred by the engineers ramming microphones down the singers' throats.

...As against which the Hickox Delius series - Mass of Life, Sea Drift etc. - were beautifully and spaciously balanced in the Wessex Hall.
