It was- for Mr Pee with the double E.

On the now defunct Radio3 MB's I was a vociferous defender of Sir Simon against those who seem determined to slag him off at every opportunity.

And thank you Alison, you were quite right! I'm looking forward to that recording immensely!

I might give his new Nutcracker a spin later- beautiful.

        For Mr Petter

Bach Violin sonatas and partitas performed by Victoria Mullova or maybe Grumiaux

Yup! I'd like those. I think I'd go for Grumiaux rather than a younger upstart. (I mean, she was only born in 1959.) No, seriously, I wouldn't say I'm very familiar with VM's recordings, whereas Grumiaux rates highly for me, particularly in chamber works. I will try to explore VM's oeuvre as well.

Yes, and the Mahler 10th in the Carpenter completion (which I don't know at all)

I have the Mullova which i would definitely recommend, a very thought provoking performance and such a great recorded sound in which to get lost in all those great Bachian moments of magic.

I feel I should reciprocate, and, playing safe but having nothing really to go on (apart from your willingness to embrace artists from the mid twentieth century), I shall choose for you the Beethoven Late Quartets played by the Hollywood Quartet, now on Testament. If you already have them, don't open the wrapping, and I'll choose something else.

                  Another one for Don Petter?

As you like Grumiaux, the complete Mozart Violin Concertos with Colin Davis and the LSO.

I don't wish to be accused of being churlish, as I was, mistakenly, before, as this time it would be appropriate. Dare I whisper it - I don't care at all for Mozart! He just doesn't do anything for me. All very tuneful and non-controversial and rather symmetrical, but that's it.

Of course, being British, I won't tell you this, but accept graciously and then pass them on to some deserving nephew or maiden Aunt.

Thank you very much - Just what I've always wanted!

                      Of course, being British
Then how about something British and suitable for the season - VW's 'Sinfonia Antartica'
Del boy: “Get in, get out, don’t look back. That’s my motto!”

An easy one. Sure you will have it but:

                        Parry: Symphony No 5 (1912)
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

How about the Bernard Haitink Concertgebouw
disc of Bizet's Symphony in C for my friend
                          and brother Petrushka ?

Yes, I'd go for VW and that would be appropriate as well as evocative. Thanks.

Beethoven's late quartet's are a great choice, ive never heard their recordings of Beethoven and having a quick listen online to the 12th it seems i should add it to my wishlist, thanks for that. I think being 35 has something to do with it, which is not to say that i dont listen to recordings from an earlier era, i love Klemperor's Brahms and a lot of pianists from that era such as Sofronitsky who's Scriabin recordings are some of the greatest, Feinberg, Neuhaus, Richter, Gould and i could go on. But i dont have the same affinity as would someone who grew up with those recordings.

Returning the favour and sticking with Beethoven for you the symphonies with Antonini and the Basel Chamber Orchestra, i could spin a never ending list superlatives for those recordings but id rather let the music do the talking.
