Don't miss Les Siècles/Roth in Stravinsky

... in the 10:20 new releases section on 25.2.12.

Their "Oiseau de Feu" is electrifying!

(See Micky D's post on another thread a couple of months ago, can't find it just at the moment)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm at work, but will catch it via iPlayer later on this weekend.

Caliban, have you heard the relevant 'Jardin' podcast, perchance?

Indeed IGI, it informed this thread, and I have been bashing MickyD's ear about it!

It was short measure, though, compared with 'big names' Litton and Fischer He didn't play any of the best bits. Nor point out that it's a live performance....

True; but a lot more Stravinsky came through in those couple of minutes than in the whole twenty minutes devoted to the other two.

(MrPee and others have waxed lyrical on another thread about the Fischer; from today's excerpts, it sounded to me to be one of Fischer's rare "wrong-footings".)

That's very perceptive, Ferney... a.k.a. I totally agree with you!!

You should try and get the whole thing. There's one of the energetic passages where the thing just catches (appropriately) fire, Bernstein-style - pulsating, instinctive, abandoned... But enough about my weekend...

Later: The Roth gets a rather sniffy review from Peter J Rabinowitz in IRR - he doesn't like the sleeve notes, he doesn't like the engineering, is it as innovative as everyone makes out, etc? I think Mr R needs to sit down and just listen to the disc with a silly grin on his chops & enjoy a rivetting performance but then what do I know?

I've enthused about the Roth* before - and will continue to do so - but I've been enjoying the Fischer, particularly for the recording quality and the playing. Not the most exciting Sacre on my shelves I'll continue to listen to it for those reasons.

                    * And if you like The Firebird and haven't heard them, try their Saint-Saëns and Berlioz discs

Decisions........ I'd also like the Kreizberg set with the Monte Carlo orchestra.

Must find some excerpts on-line of Roth's Berlioz.

Thanks - ah well, on next month's MDT order. I'm sure I'll justify the purchase!

PJPJ.... The French CD critics programme covered the piece a couple of weeks back - see the 12.2.12 programme here: http://sites.radiofrance.fr/francemu...e_id=100000065 It's still available to listen to.

Among their selected versions (they choose 6 to listen to, of which one or two are usually recent releases) was the Kreizberg as well as the Roth. The Kreizberg sounded well-played but prosaic to my ears. Give the prog a listen: don't know how your French is, but even if .. ahem... well, in any event, the extracts are worth hearing. For the first 'round' of listening, they listen 'blind' (if you know what I mean) - the runners and riders are announced about half way through...
