    BBCMM March CD Schubert Winterreise

A super disc with next month's BBC Music Magazine. The fine young baritone Dutch Henk Neven with pianist Hans Eijsackers partnering with care sings Schubert's Winterreise. In a movingly poised rendition he does not peak too early. So many (DF-D included) clobber the third song Geforne Tränen leaving nowhere to go afterwards. The sleeve notes reveal that the recording at Waterloo in November of 2010 were anxious moments. On the first day there was an electric saw to be contended with nearby, then next day helicopters at the student riots on the other side of Westminster Bridge. The third day did not take place as Neven went to hospital for emergency appendicectomy. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful performance to put up there with my favourite Wintereisses Christian Gerhaher, Matthias Goerne, Gerhard Husch, Mark Padmore, Christoph Priegarden, Thomas Quasthoff, and Brigitte Fassbender. I think it will get much playing in my household.

Thanks to BBC MM for taking a break from orchestral CDs.

Thanks for the tip-off. No doubt I won't resist getting it despite New Year resolutions to restrain myself. My collection of 14 Winterreisen includes all the excellent ones you name above except Padmore who I have seen live - plus Olaf Bär, Peter Pears, Peter Anders, Peter Schreier, Herrman Prey and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau amd most recently Natascha Mirkovic accompanied by a hurdy-gurdy - all of which have their virtues.

I haven't heard the CD but am glad to hear good reports of it as I am going to hear Henk Neven singing some Schubert with Imogen Cooper at lunchtime on Sunday 25th March during the "SchubertFest". :)

I say "some" because the programme also includes the B flat Piano Trio with the Atos Trio.

Poignant to see who started this thread . I have only just got round to listening to this record this afternoon and I agree entirely with the priase heaped upon it . A lovely voice with super tone and such care for the words . No barking ! A great record .

How strange - I played a Chris-recommended CD (Grainger/Gardiner) only this morning Barbirollians.

How nice to be reminded of him this way

Thanks for popping up this thread again. It prompted me to play the disc again and reminded me of Chris who caused me to get it. I agree very much about his diction and subtle word-pointing. I was also aware of many nice touches in the piano accompaniment.
