Footfall isn't the same as custom, though you hope it will be.

But can a single word be a cliché? And especially if it's new?

Jargon is justified if it expresses something more clearly and concisely than anything you'd have to say instead.

A foot-related jargon word I like is footprint, for the exact dimensions of the piece of ground covered by an existing building you're thinking of replacing with something else.

          .
And 'vibrant', an adjective which suddenly became popular, and then rapidly clichéd, in I think the 1990s and which I've never got used to.

Vibrant? In my view this is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! ( As heard about every issue under the sun )

... and why are so many clichés rounded off with a "to coin a phrase"?

"Whatever will be will be" is tautological, like predestination, since whatever happens was going to happen, otherwise it wouldn't.

(Unless of course you're one of those people who says things happen because they're intended. But for that to be the case would require an intender.)

Don't really agree. At the very least it's an intentional, ironic, tautology - but I'd say it's nearer to the idea of hendyadis ("it's nice and warm today";"the sound and the fury"). Both use a repetition of ideas for emphasis, and both are stylistically sound.

Cor, nice one Pab - I'll have to practice the pronunciation before I use it, mind

Mind you, it looks faintly Welsh: "hendyadis" (? = "the old couple"?)

That's one thing I enjoy about these forums, Ams - where else would I ever get the chance to write 'hendyadis'?
