Ah, but that wouldn’t help likes of me who needs more detailed guidance as to what to listen to and what a particular way the instrument sounds or the performer makes it sound could mean what the composer might have intended etc. and so forth. Yes, I see that this is a rather tiresome thing to have to listen to if you can do all this by yourself. Sorry about that.

I thought for what she was doing, HW sounded very professional and I also thought that Andrew kept reasonably (unusually ) quiet.

As a matter of fact, I heard it by accident as I did not think the music would be interesting enough to put aside more pressing job/chore but I did and now I am paying for it (by time).

CD Review, which is still the highlight of the radio week for me.
    Couldn’t agree more.

Good point, ds. But that sort of enlightenment, which I also need and welcome, is not provided by DracoM's examples of calling a performance 'radiant, spontaneous, with rapt attention to detail and visionary quality', which is all too frequently what happens.

Can we have a moratorium on the use of "iconic". Iconic should never be applied to a piece of music. Period.

              When it comes to cliches:
              The Germans are:
Extremily digilant, and efficient and disciplined and make railways run on time

Sometimes on the other thread, I find myself trying comment on the last concert I heard, and find it almost impossible. It's all rather reminiscent of the local paper reviewing the drama society --"Mrs Hood our schoolteacher was very good, and remembered all her lines "
How do you sum up a live performance of a Shostakovich symphony without using all the same tired terms? Critics have to do it on a near daily basis, I'm only surprised that they manage to fish so many expressions out of the hat.

Harsh, vinsanto! Anna was doubtless struggling to open a can of alcohol-free lager while watching the rugby at the same time as typing

Another cliche: Petroc trelawny has just tweeted: "Coming up - Autumnal Brahms". How about some Springlike Brahms for a change?

Or maybe some Serious or Tragic Brahms!

                                "Treasurable recording / performance."

Makes me want to throw knives.
