Thank you for that - I kinda thought that may be the word on the street! I do admire Solti very much; his LvB, Brahms, R Strauss and his opera recordings, etc. I'm even growing to enjoy his Elgar! But as for dear old Anton - bless him, I think I'll stick with my EMI Jochum.

Et oui - il fait très beau ici, sauf dans les soirs et les matins, quand les temperatures baissent beaucoup!

Tonight my "concert" is going to be Shostakovich syms 4 and/or 10, Philadelphia/Ormandy followed by Elgar VC, Perlmann/Barenboim/CSO.

    Bonne soirée,
    Nick
Mention of Ormandy - another conductor out of favour, loads of Beethoven , Brahms etc remains unreissued (don't try this word on the scrabble board).

I have always liked Ormandy's recordings since I 'discoverd' him/them way back in the early 90s, when there seemed to be an almost giveaway frenzy of absurdly cheap prices for CDs - in London at any rate - for example to name a very few; Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, his Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky's 'Pictures'...and I have some Ives....

Thanks so much Jayne - will do

I agree that his Amsterdam Bruckner is generally the best - especially that glorious 1986 5th!

Anyone enjoying the Bruckner 7 and Mozart 33 coupling (his favourite Mozart, I must have at least 6 Jochum recording of it) can find a live Concertgebouw performance from Tokyo on Altus from HMV Japan dating from around the same period.

          My favourite, in fact!

P.S. I was also at that Vienna Phil. concert at the RAH in March 1982 (along with a pregnant Mrs Parry 1912!). Happy memories, indeed!

Ormandy's Mahler 2 is also well worth seeking out. I had to get my CD transfer from Japan, however.

Continuing the Ormandy tangent, his Nielsen 1st and 6th Symphonies are among the best, last seen in that excellent budget box with Bernstein's 2-5. Rachmaninov 1-3 also unsurpassed in their power-and-glory way, though I think he still has a few cuts in 2(iv)...
lovely Johann Strauss disc too, and luscious RStrauss poems (especially Heldenleben). I got most of these years ago, in an obsessive few weeks at HMV, all on Sony SBKs. Lovely time!

Really we could do with remastered reissues with Ormandy... not much chance now though.

Jochum recorded the B min mass twice (and there is also at least one "bootleg" off-air recording from the 1950s).
The first was from 1957 a Phillips recording, which seems no longer available and I cannot discover who the soloists were.
The second is from 1980: the EMI disc DoctorT mentions: no DF-D, alas.

                Best Wishes.

He redidd Rach 2 without the cuts on RCA later, I have it on CML86 which I think was some club edition on license from RCA. Would be nice as apart of a Sony box of Ormandy and Rachmaninov! Sony and RCA coming together could combine this well!

The Philips one was reissued as a Duo - I purchased one recently 2nd hand from Marketplace (comes with Redel doing one of the short masses. Soloists are Lois Marshall, Topper, Pears, Borg and Hans Braun. It's enjoyable enough but the EMI is rather special.

Ageed about Jochum - that EMI Bruckner set is worth exploring - if only for that wonderful Dresden SK richness of tone. The Brahms symphonies made at Kingsway in July and October 76 with LPO are available for download at Amazon.

Ah, Ferney to the rescue! Thank you, that is indeed the one. Strange how I thought the mighty D-FS was on that?

I cannot imagine you are confusing the B min Mass with Die Meistersinger or Carmina Burana which figure D-FD in the Jochum versions?

Jochum's LSO Beethoven cycle is very fine - I don't think I have ever heard a better transition from the Scherzo to the Finale in the 5th - and when my cassette snapped I was very sad to see it go and its reissue on CD I should very much like to see.

The complete LSO/Jochum LvB cycle is going on Amazon for very silly prices. I have the LSO 9th. Hopefully, one day the LSO/Jochum and Munich PO/Kempe cycles will see reissue.
