    CD Review 14.1.12

    I am looking forward to this very much indeed http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0195pg1

    Lots of Elgar, inc. conducted by Elgar; piano music with Geoffrey Norris; Shostakovich inc. the new No 15...

    And above all, not a singer in earshot, caterwauling... (*ducks for cover*)

    That's what I call a good programme!

      Good point about the potential voices in Elgar I can live with Gerontius though

        This looks like a really good programme indeed. Of late, I think that the programme content has been rather weak?

          ... it was bliss ... an all morning lie in with the radio doing exactly what it is best at .... many thanks to the CD Review team ....

          According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

            ... such a joy to have a free morning - as I have no interest in Elgar, romantic violins, Shostakovitch, Dohnyani etc - a good bracing Thames-side walk - most refreshing...

                This just has to be one of the best CD Reviews of all time what I heard this morning. The BaL was rather good to. I havnt the recordsings that were reccomended, so I may think about the Zehetmair and Little ones.

                #The first two movemments of DS's 15th Symphony, were quite simply words cannot describe how I felt at the end of the performance!

                  Poor old Charles Mott... that 1917 (?) recording of Fringes of the Fleet was awful, wasn't it... interesting but awful... His singing sounded like the aural equivalent of gurning. Tragic though that he was called up and killed so soon after. Amazing to be listening to stuff recorded during World War 1.

                  Ms McGann in the Sea Pictures was a little better... but..

                      Yes: difficult not to laugh, wasn't it?

                      As for Vinty and dovers' attempts to spoil the party - well, I rather feel the same about all the totally unnecessary orchestrations of Moussorgsky's Pictures so I shall have my morning walk then!

                          An utterly absorbing performance of this tremendous work: so much so, I'd forgotten it was CD Review and felt quite rudely "awoken" when AMcG "interrupted"! I can see why there's been so many enthusiastic comments about the disc. Ho hum: more expense!

                            Good Lord - I have no wish to spoil the party of any of you who enjoy Elgar, Shostakovitch, and others...

                            I was just delighted that - for once - I did not feel in any way tied to my radio of a Saturday morning. And - of course - it also meant that - for once - it was a surprisingly cheap morning for me!

                            (... and if we've got Mussorgsky coming up - hooray: another free morning, a healthy walk, and more substantial savings... )

                              I heard most of programme but Nigel Slater on TV made me miss the Shost 15 - must listen on iplayer if it was that good!
