    Bach Motets

The only set of Bach's Motets that I've ever had is by the Bach Choir Stockholm with Concentus Musicus Wien under Harnoncourt from 1980.

I've never liked it much. Sounds thick and treacly to my ears.

What would be a better bet?

I have Herreweghe's first recording which is extremely satisfying. He does Jesu meine Freude OVPP which I like very much. I am told that his second recording is even finer.

How do you rate it, BBM? I like some Cantata recordings I have by him and his choir.

I have Gardiner's Erato set, if it is still available it is highly recommedable. It is a two-disc set and also contains a number of motet-like works.

My favourite is the all male version recorded back in the 80s by the Hilliards and London Baroque for EMI Reflexe. It disappeared for years and is now happily available again on a Virgin twofer along with some Schutz. I believe it is the only all male version that was ever recorded - high time that the admirable Higginbottom tackled these marvellous pieces with his Oxford forces, methinks.

A few of years ago when our choir started doing Jesu, meine Freude (a bit tricky for amateurs) I had no CD version and after some research went for Tafelmusik on the Canadian Radio label, CBC. I find it to be excellent.

I'm in the market for a CD of Bach's motets and would be interested in hearing what people make of the new Gardiner disc, released earlier this year.

                      It received rave reviews.

There's also Herreweghe released on his own label

                      and Suzuki.

Any opinions on these three discs?
