Klemperer Mahler 2 - Bavarian RSO

Has anyone else heard this? I only read about it today and downloaded from HMV digital for £4.99 (320kbps).

It’s on EMI and taken from the original stereo radio master tapes so the sound is more than tolerable (albeit noticeably inferior to the studio version).

Performance wise there’s some pretty amazing stuff in this. The 2nd movement is extremely lovely, the climactic outburst in the 3rd mvt gave me goosebumps, Dame Janet’s Urlicht is absolutely outstanding and the opening of the finale is terrifying. The work’s opening is less impactful than in the studio version but overall I’m impressed. (I prefer it to both Kubelik recordings with the BRSO.)

I know and have this one! Grabbed it when it 'came out' for a song!! It is rather good, isn't it?

This is my favourite Klemperer Mahler 2 (of the several that are available) and, in my view, markedly superior to his EMI studio account. Dame JB is rather closely miked but I don't suppose many will complain. I bought this as soon as it came out and haven't heard it for very many moons so time for another spin, I think. Mind you, I have CD's from Jansons and Maazel not heard yet as well as a Haitink radio broadcast to catch up on yet.
