I just realised how to find out how much memory has been allocated to ripped CDs without having to do a directory listing.

In iTunes just go to Library -> Music, and at the bottom of the page it tells you how many hours and how much memory has been allocated.

The frightening thing is that mine currently reads:

4897 songs, 22.3 days, 120.75 GB

In Japanese Shakuhachi music (the Honkyoku repertoire) there used to be the concept of the "closed repertoire"
once the 36 (I seem to remember ?) pieces were written then the repertoire was considered to be complete
so no-one wrote any more pieces for the instrument
(in more recent times many pieces have been written so it no longer applies

is the set of musical compositions finite ?

if one has a directory does that mean that one is always using the part of consciousness to do with "choice" to select what you will listen to ? will this prevent the "happy accident" of finding something that you had forgotten ?

Mine: 8400 songs, 35 days, 65.76 GB

I used to use the Pianoworld forum and this was one of the ever reoccurring grumbles on that forum.

And advertising some gadget or other in the BBCMM, it tells you how many tracks it will hold.

I agree. However, is it possible that what we might call a piece or tune in some language, such as Japanese, might actually be a translation of the word "song" (English)?

Also, re your "songs" - you've fairly obviously not used lossless compression - or alternatively you've managed to find "albums" with very many very short "songs, or "songs" which are so minimalist and lacking in complexity that they compresses very hard indeed"!

Mine are mostly compressed using ALAC in an attempt to keep the quality of sound from the CDs, though some are bought MP3s, or AACs.

Perhaps two external hard drives: one for regular use and the second for a backup of your music collection plus backups of your PC.

Depends!

1. Are you intending to load more in?
2. It would definitely be worth having a spare hard drive or two to back this all off. You don't want to have to redo it all again, do you?

iTunes seems to work fine from an external drive. I bought several 750 Gbyte units recently when they were cheap at Tesco. Occasionally I take them elsewhere, and back
the files off on to other machines.

So that's it - short works and movements on Breakfast and EC, songs to attract younger listeners, that's what they can understand!
