Splutter - I do not agree that the Walter Columbia Pastoral is lethargic . It is a classic ! Up there with Bohm,Boult,Kletzki,Cluytens , Kleiber pere et fils and Szell( the Szell is fabulous

Yes - an excellent set - not been out on CD yet but should be!

No point in including the Battle Sym!

Was the '88 Weller? That must have been about the time he did the CBSO cycle in the old Town Hall.

              Yes, it was Weller.

Similarly there is a really good set of his mono Brahms symphonies on Sony with the NYPO which is more urgent than the later Columbia SO.

Like many other slightly obscure Beethoven cycles (Joseph Keilberth for example), it's available in Japan. I looked at it in Tower Records (it wasn't very expensive) but struggled to remember anything very positive being said about it at the time so I didn't buy it. Perhaps I shouldn't have been so hasty in my judgement.

The set was on DG but spearheaded by the 5th being on a Contour LP. It was a really good performance and a contemporary and much rival to the Carlos Kleiber on DG. The other notable Contour issue at the time was the Del Mar Enigma and P&C Marches which also ended up on DG.

I was only aware of the Wyn Morris and the Walter Weller. The former is rather good - spacious and convincing, but I found the latter to be rushed: "It's not proper Beethoven, so let's get it over and done with".

I've been listening to the JEG, Hogwood, Norrington, Krivine, Goodman/Huggett and Antonini (except #9) symphony cycles and really enjoy the more modern approach.

I fancy adding another set to my collection and was thinking od Bruggen's 2011 live Rotterdam set or the van Immerseel with Anima Eterna.

Does anybody have a view on the merit of these recordings, or can offer a steer?

I got hold of the Anima Eterna recordings when they first came out - haven't played them much since, but I enjoyed them a lot, I do remember. I tend to find Bruggen too slow for my taste in Haydn, but don't know how he approaches Beethoven.

Despite all the blemishes, I still love that old Hanover Band set. I must be one of the few people who like the cavernous Nimbus recording acoustic!

Funny enough, for the first time last night, I found the Hanover recording 'cavernous'. It had never really occurred to me before - must be because I have played so many sets in close succession that the comparison becomes more obvious.
