As I mentioned in the OP (many years ago!!!) - a much more convincing cycle IMO than the Chailly: my favourite of the more recent (!) "big band" sets.

But the 2nd (mostly!) and 3rd symphonies from that group are on

with other delights that I have rehearsed here often.
I have just spent a blissful afternoon listening to that Haitink Mahler 2 What a performance! The closing announcement also took me back a bit!

t didn't me, I was too young ... ... but "Vernon Handley was the 'sub-conductor' of the off-stage band". A Haitink-Handley doubles partnership: good times, the 60s !!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Getting back on topic (reluctantly!!); while searching for the missing patch mentioned in respect of Loughran, LSO and Beethoven 2 I discovered that I have all of the 1st Symphony with the same forces. This will appear soon as will Bach's 3rd and 4th Orchestral Suites from the Busch ensemble which I found were virtually ready for uploading having been processed some years ago.

Sorry to continue off topic, but I dont know where else to ask this!! Inspired by the aforementioned Haitink Prom Mahler 2 I am tempted to add yet another performance to my library, that of Haitink/Dresden Live.Does anyone have any opinions on this? It has got some very good reviews

I am tempted to be flippant and say if Clement played it like that no wonder it was almost forgotten until Joachim played it !

Too brusque and jagged for me even though it is not as quick as one might expect it sounds more rushed than the timings suggest .

Yes, I think you could acquire this version with every confidence. The reviews on Amazon pretty much sum up the strengths of the performance which on balance I'd prefer to the more recent Chicago release under the same conductor.

Loving the Bruggen Philips Eroica despite the odd surprising ritardando in the first movement.

This Bruggen set has been a real ear opener . Although there are some surprising tempi and accelerations and decelerations they make the music sound anew without the hairshirted overly rushed nature of one or two other HIPP cycles I have heard .

                              1 outstanding
                              2 also very fine
3 Lots of great things but the tempi manipulations bothered me a bit
4 The highlight of the whole set with the most wonderful brooding introduction I have ever heard I think . In fact , now I suspect my favourite Fourth .
5 Nothing the slightest hackneyed about this reading another which just shows the amazing nature of Beethoven's genius even if it has to yield say to Kleiber et fils in the transition from scherzo to finale
                              6 Not heard yet
7 Occasionally this work can sound meretricious in some speedy performances - not here the movements build a superb cumulative momentum .
8 Good but less good than I expected - I was hoping for an account as wonderful as the Fourth
                              9 Not heard yet

I must get round to finishing listening to the Bruggen set but I have been listening to the much lauded Krivine - four symphonies in - very bright well played performances but no special insights to my ears . What am I missing ?
