    Dave2002,

The Karajan set with the Philharmonia was recorded in the 1950s and is indeed in mono. Looks a bargain, although personally I think HvKs best set was the first he recorded with the BPO in the early 1960s.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
Lady Bracknell The importance of Being Earnest

Which is not a patch on the set recorded by the same orchestra under Cluytens direction a year or two earlier.

Nearly bought the Krivine after hearing part of the cycle via medici last Spring, all of your comments make me wish I had. So it's back in the Amazon basket (again). How to justify... when Mum needs new hearing aids.

How one's feelings change... after the pastoral thread I took out Szell's 6th, but found it terribly slow and heavy - just too BIG a sound. I find I always want period instruments, or at least smaller chamber orchestras now, in Beethoven, Haydn and so on. The largest of the conventional orchestras I can still enjoy would be Norrington's Stuttgart RSO or (as is by now well-known!) Scherchen with RPO or VSOO. The latter always sounds swift, sharp, fresh and never too weighty or too richly Romantic. But with much depth and character too.

I guess I'll have to find the cash for Krivine sooner or later.

Three years on the Bruggen is back in circulation now he is no longer with us coupled with the Violin Concerto and his recordings of the Creatures of Prometheus .

So far what a joy these performances are - now that is what HIPP should sound like- a proper performance and not just revelling in their sonorities . so far 1,2 and 7 have all been superb NO 1 in particular had to play it again immediately . The much praised ZEhetmair performance of the violin concerto however did not appeal on first hearing .

Certainly NOT 'up there' with many others. It just doesn't seem to get out of second gear. No 'vif' too bland.

Give me Kogan, Oistrakh, Zukerman, Szering, Krebbers et al, anyday......

Heard the 2nd done by LGO/Masur on CFM Full Works on Monday evening - good playing and sound but to my ears the larghetto is too fast (OK you HIPP guys will no doubt say that's what Beethoven's metronome says but I prefer it a little more leisurely.

Does anyone know the old ASV Hickox set? I've liked that since it appeared.

You gave me a nudge there, Dave. Before my time, but he is a legend in Leipzig, still much talked about. My wife's home town. I have one rather threadbare LP (East German Eterna label). There's a good deal at jpc. I think I'll go for it. 18.98 Euro incl postage.

What a fine Pastoral from Andrew Manze the other night.

One day he will surely deliver a 'cycle' worth having.

Ah yes, the old Hickox set. When released almost all other modern instrument recordings were still slow and heavy.
