I heard Gunther Wand’s cycle, quite recently, and I think, this could possibly be the best out there. In the top five, at any rate.

I don’t think that is fair in Chailly’s case - it is his interpretation historically informed practice that flawed his Eroica with its much too fast Marcia funebre. Sounded like they were all glad the hero was dead !

Just started on another cheaply purchased set the NYPO/Bernstein a very charming First and his well known Eroica. His relatively brisk allegro con brio at the time doesn’t sound at all fast to me. Very fine .

I may have missed it during my hiatus, but has any one praised the completion of the Jordi Savall cycle? I had received 6-9 a few weeks ago for me this the historically informed cycle that I prefer. Yes, the tympanist sounds like he had to many double espressos, but interventional percussion has always been a Savall trait

As it was of Beethoven, I would venture.

I didn't pay too much attention, but there was a lot of discussion about these CDs - around its HIPP as against any other status - for the symphonies, but I couldn't point you to which thread (if its not this one?) (With a name like Jordi Savall and comparitively recent time frame the search function on this board may return useful results, for once.

Savall's Beethoven symphonic survey is discussed at various points in this thread: http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...631#post871631

Been enjoying reacquaintance with the LCP/Norrington so far - 1,2,4 and 8 as fine as remembered . The Eroica bright and exciting but the Funeral March rather superficial.

I really dislike that cycle. There are so many preferable HIP cycles-Savall, Hogwood, Bruggen, JEG, just to name a few

                        Harsh !

I prefer the early Bruggen and do not know the Savall but I prefer Rog to the JEG and Hogwood efforts.

                          I do too. Mind you, I don’t like Gardiner’s p, either.

But what about his mp and mf, BBM?
                            Are they OK?

                              Indeed not. I’m afraid.

I agree, those Norrington recordings sound very harsh now, especially after one has listened to other HIP versions by conductors that are musicians and not ideologies with stopwatches
