Yes, I both recall the Concert Classics issue and also have it in an EMI Icon box. However, things have moved on. It does not shine as brightly as it did back in the early 1960s. I'll stick with his BRSO set. I was not that taken with his recordings of the masses with the LSO.

Putting my 'smug' hat on, I remember winning the school Christmas Carol Competition in 1963, the prize being a £1 EMI record token. I bought this RPO/Davis recording with it and was very happy with it for many years.

S/XLP20038 - a must for all collections in the 60s! - and its first issue was on bargain priced label - like Alps I now have it in 5he ICON box.

Yes they were both excellent. It was the LGO and the original Fontana recordings were cut to fit sides when they appeared on the cheap Fontana Stereo Special label. Konwitschny’s No2 was my first and much treasured.

Sadly, this never came off. However, for anyone who listened to Jegger's memorable contributions to COTW, I would endorse watching this series of videos, in which the conductor rehearses and discusses the nine.

I just noticed that jpc.de have a set of Beethoven symphonies conducted by Norrington with the SWR - under £20. Any good?

Die CD Roger Norrington - Konzerteinführung mit Musikbeispielen zu den Sinfonien von Ludwig van Beethoven jetzt probehören und kaufen.

One of my all-time, longterm favourite cycles, (bought on its release) despite many other favourites & newcomers from Toscanini and Scherchen to Bruggen, Fischer and Haselböck... .....
In resplendent SWR German Radio sound, all recorded live in a single week in 2002......the 9th here is just stunning, leaving shockwaves in its trail!
This a long, long thread so you may find earlier comments of mine somewhere above....

His LCP one is very good, but this is the Norrington set I would always go for now....(true of much of his SWR Catalogue, Schubert, Haydn, Bruckner..)

                  See Gramophone 8/2003 (RO).

                        How very odd....
I have the original box here with slightly different (very similar) cover art & English script, and the 9th is certainly in that....so probably a jpc error....why would they leave it out? Check elsewhere....
This is the one in the box here.....

Vinteuil's link to the 2020 issue shows it as included....

                              I think their timings for the 7/8 are wrong - 8 probably 22 mins not 32 !
