Yeh. What would such a minor composer know about how his music should be played? How fortunate that we have had an extended period during which far superior musical minds have corrected his misunderstanding of his own work.

Any other views on the Monteux set? Feeling very tempted.

No duff performances and the 2,4,6,7 are fab and I love the mysterious chaotic Ninth.

I disagree with Barbs here, I find the 9th off putting. Let’s just say it’s an acquired taste. The glory of the Monteux set is the Pastoral. The rest of it is solid, but nothing above and beyond the other 300 complete Beethoven sets out there, and I say this as a Monteux devotee

I think he was too busy with Wagner and Bruckner. I think the only Beethoven I have by him is with Curzon in PC4/5.

I have that disc. The only other Beethoven/Knappertsbusch on my shelves is a two CD set on Orfeo featuring the VPO in live recordings from 1954 and 1962 of the Coriolan Overture, the 3rd PC (with Backhaus) and Symphonies 3 & 7.

I love the amazingly modern nature of Monteux ‘s 9th and 2,4 and 7 are way better than solid.

I happened upon this whilst googling!

Looks an interesting mix of maestros with the CAO/RCO

The presence of Dorati there - the DG RPO on CD would have been a welcome addition to the 2020 LvB releases!

You might! Recently came across the fact that the Solti Ring on LP in 1970 cost £42. The equivalent today, according to the CPI Inflation Calculator, is a whopping £653.98.

I must check whether these, or at least some of them, are also in the big RCO radio recordings box.

Yes, you’re right and we have recorded music available now at such attractive prices which is a major factor leading to over-full shelves!
