This evening, a CD of Rachmaninov's Vespers which arrived in the post today - The State Academic Russian Choir conducted by Alexander Sveshnikov on Melodiya. I've had this on mp3 from a previous release, but saw the disc available at a reasonable price before Christmas.

I rather enjoy one of the last three Schubert piano sonatas in the evening, varying the recordings according to mood.

              Excellent choice, Danny boy.

I find Arensky a rather lovable composer.

Yes, much to enjoy in Arensky's piano music. Balakirev too. Yundi Li's Chopin is immaculate in so many ways yet satisfying in none. It's on loan from a friend so at least I didn't have to shell out for it :)

I am going through the Villa-Lobos quartets, one a night (the cheapo-cheapo Latin American Quartet set). They seem to me to be pleasant, perhaps undemanding but nevertheless beguiling works. I am not yet halfway through, however.

After them it will be the Beethoven sonatas played by Kempff, a recent second-hand acquisition. I disliked his interpretations fifty years ago but feel I have matured enough since.

Listening to the BPO under Julius Prüwer.... late 1920s/early 1930s... a wonderful sound.

I generally do not listen to music just before bedtime, but usually have a work going round and round in my head. Last night it was the 2nd movement of Mahler 7.

For me, it's generally the repeat of Composer of the Week as I climb into my pyjamas. This week is a particular treat - dreams of brooding forests and frozen lakes as I snuggle under the bedclothes!
