John, I got my Naive Vegh Beethoven set only a year or so ago. It definitely has pre-emphasis.

I do recall one CD from my first copy of the Bridge set of Feldman's For Phillip Guston had one disc which would not rip in EAC, though it did seem to play well enough. The supplier replaced the set and all discs in the replacement ripped without problem (allowing me to edit and burn a continuous version to an audio DVD). That suggests that one should not jump to the conclusion that pre-emphasis is the principal, or sole, cause of ripping failure.

Oh, by the way, the Naive Vegh Bartok set does not employ pre-emphasis.

iTunes 10.5.2 is allegedly out now, according to one of the Mac rumour sites, and has apparently resolved this issue.

I'll give it a try tomorrow and report back.

A sample of 3 CDs suggests that at least the worst excesses of iTunes have been rectified in 10.5.2. It is now possible to listen
without having to immediately rip one's headphones off, or reach for the off button. Whether CDs with pre-emphasis are decoded
correctly I don't know, but the three I tried at least don't sound unpleasant any more.

        Test discs:
Hugo Alfven - Neeme Järvi. Symphony 2.
Mahler 1, Horenstein, LSO from CFM mag.
Bruckner 3, Nelsons, CBSO, BBC MM.

How does the Mahler 1 compare with the excerpt I de-emphasised?
