As far as I know there's no way of storing the books outside the device itself, although I imagine Amazon would allow me to download them again if the device failed. Normally I wouldn't be interested in one either, but needs must....

It doesn't feel to me like I own it that way, and I only have to burn it to disc anyway so that I can play it on my stereo, meaning I don't get a booklet, and have to listen to an MP3 (which, no matter how much I'm told otherwise, does sound different).

I so much dislike downloading music that if an album is too pricey or not available on Amazon, but they offer me the tracks as MP3s, I will put off buying the album until it comes down in price or becomes available again in physical form, even if that means years.

I have no intention of ever owning a Kindle either.
If I was twenty years younger, I would copy Pilchardman's eminently sensible views (which completely coincide with my own!) and put a yellow "thumbs up" sign next to them. Since I am from an older age-group, I will simply say "hear hear!" Not only would I feel stupid using those signs, but that particular one reminds me too much of the dreadful Norman Vaughan from the London Palladium shows of my youth. (Younger members should just think Bruce Forsythe but worse.)

I'm informed that the long-running CD mail order firm The Woods is closing due to lack of new releases/re-releases and a declining customer base. Sign of the times perhaps?

The spate of large box set compilations of the last few years does have the feeling of a "last hurrah" with companies capitalising on back catalogue while the going is good and specialist re-cyclers like Brilliant appearing on the scene. I have succumbed to quite a few of them. The most recent for me has been the EMI Delius 150th package which I can't imagine I would ever have decided to take on as 18CDs worth of download.

The boxes are great value, of course but with pleasant side-effect of buying a "job lot" where you often end up with recordings which you would never have specifically ordered but which turn out to be great additions to your collection.

I went into the Apple store in Regent Street a few days ago to make an enquiry about using iCloud, and was advised by a very helpful assistant who was probably in his early twenties. After a few minutes discussion, I told him that storing music on my Mac and listening on cans was not on my agenda, because I liked listening properly at home on high end equipment. He was delighted to hear it, and we discussed audio enthusiastically before he shook my hand. It was nice to know that we are not all seen as dinosaurs by the young!

Not only my own feeling but also that of my son and my nephew who are both in their 20s. So it's not just a generational thing.

Yes, their last mailing was sent out a few days ago. This is really sad. Their customer service was amazing; they knew their stuff and took an interest in what they were selling. There's a few weeks left for some final orders - and they have a stunning list of reduced price CD, either second hand or from their former shop in Bognor

I have such pleasant memories of browsing through their second hand CDs at their shop in the Bognor arcade...I found much buried treasure there!

That's very easily done. All you need is an Airport Express wifi adaptor with the audio out (analogue or digital) connected to your hifi and it's possible to listen to the music on your Mac through the main stereo. If you have an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad you can control the music directly from your seat rather than from the Mac.

I listen to music at home this way - though I use an Apple TV2 rather than the Airport Express. It works very well - and I ripped all my CDs in a lossless format.

My question about all this is the work involved. I listened to a better-than-CD download via a decent Hi Fi and was VERY impressed. However the amount of know-how, set up and general faff involved makes the good old LP seem like the most user-friendly medium imaginable.....

Doesn't this mean that you are using the internal soundcard of the computer ?
I use a macbook for everything these days but would never use the internal soundcard for "serious" listening or recording preferring an external muiltichannel firewire interface (mainly because I do performances and recordings in more than 2 channels )

I have yet to come across a computer (apart from specially built ones in studios etc) that has an "acceptable" signal > noise on the output, the macbook that I use cost me just over £1000 but the sound quality is far from good from the onboard soundcard.

No, the airport express I mentioned has digital output, that bypasses any 'in computer' soundcards.

Specifically referring to your Macbook, the socket you plug your headphones into also provides a digital output. All you need is a suitable optical digital lead to connect your Macbook to a DAC or optical input in your amp.
