Havergal Brian "Gothic" symphony

The Prom performance to be released in December by Hyperion:

On 17 July 2011 over 800 performers gathered in London’s Royal Albert Hall to give a rare performance of Havergal Brian’s Symphony No 1 in D minor—‘The Gothic’. Tickets for this Prom sold out within 24 hours, and so it gives us great pleasure to make this live recording available to all.

It’s a pretty phenomenal work. Responding to the challenge set by Sir Henry Wood, the composer has thrown just about every known orchestral instrument into the mix, then adding a double chorus of over 500, plus children’s choirs, for an hour-long Te Deum—the church’s blazing Hymn of Thanksgiving—which makes up the symphony’s finale.

Whether or not you were lucky enough to be there on the night, this is a recording not to be missed.

    8 minutes 39 seconds of applause? that's a bonus.

I'll be directing questions at Hyperion re. the dynamic range of the recording before I consider placing an order. Oh, and why CDs and not surround SACDs?

Handy for those dinner parties where you've used every pan in the house & the guests seem underwhelmed, mercia?

Here is a 'fingerprint' of the opening minute (with the final 10 seconds faded out in each case) of the only sample of the Hyperion currently available online, followed by that of the HD Sound version (with the overall level adjusted to give the same peak value). The dynamic compression in the HD Sound version is clearly shown, even is such a brief extract:

and here they are in WAV format:

Indeed - I was hoping the release would be from Chandos on SACD.

Actually, there was no chance of that, given that Martyn Brabbins has a long-standing recording relationship with Hyperion.

Nah, it's just a small image of it. The real thing's about 120x120mm.

My first thought as well. Surely, someone at Hyperion has a bit more imagination?

Why would you think that? They did not, after all, have the imagination to record and issue it in surround sound.

They are perhaps relying on big sales in Whitby.

Anyone here seen it at a more competitive price than that asked by amazon.co.uk?

As a work it doesn't seem to inspire the greatest cover art.

Not surprisingly, Hyperion, and retailers, will be charging a premium price for this one in order to capitalise on the surge of interest following the Proms performance. Unless sales fail to meet forecasts I would expect bargains to be thin on the ground. Simple economics I'm afraid.
