    Die Zauberflote

It's not often that I disagree with Rob Cowan (and agree with Hilary Finch!), but he's just given a very lukewarm response to Jacobs' recording. I recently got this as a present, and I think it's magic! Sorry Rob (hope you're reading this, by the way)! Does anyone agree?

I've only heard short extracts (and haven't yet had a chance to listen to this morning's discussion), but much as I love the instrumental sound, I think that frilly fortepiano playing would irritate me more & more on repeated listening.

      Die Zauberflote

I have to agree, I have he recording along with several others and I enjoy it very much. I am not bothered by the forte piano, etc. It is very enjoyable to me. To address the first comment about agreeing with Rob. First I respect Rob very much, but I find that I do not often agree with him. Mostly, in the fact that for me, I'm not so interested in historic recordings. I leave those to Rob who is an expert.

To my ears, it sounded much too fluttery and insubstantial. Worth hearing once, though... agreed with RC on this new recording.

Give me Klemperer any day... it could almost count as a 'historic' recording by now.

'...one of his finest achievements on record; indeed, he is inspired...' (Penguin Guide - spot on, for a change!)

          Hörspiel

Hilary Finch said that the recording was conceived as a 'hörspiel' and AG said that it sounded more like a radio play. My understanding is that a 'hörspiel' is in reality a radio play, although one often generated by composers rather than playwrights. Heiner Goebbels and Mauricio Kagel both essayed examples of the form.
