There's a very fine 'live' Klemperer Missa Solemnis on Testament SBT 1408, Festival Hall, 1963. I love the way the woodwind 'cry out' in the Agnus Dei, the sort of moment which made Klemperer's live concerts memorable.

The line-up is similar to the Angel recording , but exept for Ernst Haefliger and Gottlob Frick.

Thanks for this, I'm not sure how I missed this issue. Duly ordered.

Glad to see these boards staggering back into life, and hopefully the layout and general operation will improve in a little while. At least it's back now - even if only for testing.

In the interim I did buy the Klemperer box set, but I'm not convinced totally about the sound quality. It's difficult to say - and the equipment I use is now different from what it was in the past, but for example I'm not sure that the Schubert 9th improves on the LP which I have in a cupboard. I will keep trying.

The comparisons I made were between remastered CD in the new box and either CD in an earlier incarnation or SACD. LP vs remastered CD not practicable as LPs in Scotland and new box here in France. But I can believe that the sound from an LP may sound as good or better than from any CD/SACD if you have a good vinyl set-up.

My first attempt at posting here. I am not sure that I appreciate much of a difference after listening to the Brahms symphonies and comparing to the previous CD incarnation. Yet I am enjoying the box as I didn’t have most of these recordings

In the past my vinyl setup wasn't great, but it was quite good. When I used to do direct comparisons between LPs and CDs generally, but not always, the CD was better - or at least didn't have obvious distortion or background hiss or rumble - but there were one or two which sounded better on LP. Whether that was because of the recording, or because of additional artefacts in my system which "enhanced" things I don't know - but one I remember was the Barbirolli record of English string music - Elgar and VW. Possibly it sounded better on disc because acoustic feedback to the pickup might have added extra resonance to the string sound! In other cases where I suspected there were differences I discovered that there really weren't - if I started the CD and the LP at the same point. Some LPs sounded much better on other kit - from other people - than my own, but now we are talking about kit costing £000s vs mine which didn't. The same might also be true of other hardware components in domestic systems - I have noticed differences in CD players - though often for short periods - they all sound the same. It's only when listening to some CDs on some kit that one can clearly discern that some are much "better" [more effective, pleasanter to listen to, more gripping] than others, and it isn't always a matter of the price of the kit either and it may also only apply to certain passages on any one CD.
