He had played it in class that day (I should mention that I have triplets, so all of the kids were in the same music class). My children were flabbergasted when they discovered that I had never heard of it, because they thought my knowledge of Classical Music was infinite. It turns out the teacher's parents were Finns that had emigrated to the States and the Oceanidies was his favorite work of Sibelius, but in the days before streaming and you tube I could not produce a recording of it for the kids before their paper was due, and a check of the catalog at the time revealed that there were only two extent recordings, one of which was by Vanska which I susbsequently obtained.
The Penguin Guide was always a good way of seeing what works were available by which composers. That's where I picked up on the various Sibelius works, back in the late 80s/90s. Scene with Cranes is more of a rarity. Rattle CBSO is the only recording I'm aware of.

I think I used the Schwann Catalog at the time, which I used to buy quarterly.

          - when rfg mentioned Stokowski's recording of Sibelius' #1, yesterday, I thought how KCII would have had so much to tell us about this.

Best wishes if you ever look in here, KCII.

I have had the CD in my Amazon 'basket' for ages, hoping the price will go easy, but it hasn't. Maybe I should stop being tight and press the 'buy button'

But OMG what good value.......!!! This must have been on the 'Bargains' thread, was it?!

It would be a crime NOT to get this at that price...!

And the Collins... to add to the live Rattle cycle which I've just slotted onto the iPod... to add to the recent Storgards cycle. In addition to the Vanska.

Do I need all these? (It's a rhetorical question, Beef Steak! )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Of course you need them! (this is a rhetorical answer, tempest-man )

I paid a whopping £10.22 for a brand new set, incl p&p from Amazon marketplace!

I don't know if they were on the bargains thread, I just went on the Amazon site and had a gander.

While we're on the subject, have you bought these, yet?

I honestly think Mrs. PG will divorce me if I dare to play any more Sibelius! First the Berlin Phil. on their Digital Concert Hall, then the Radio3 broadcasts, then me banging on about going to London, then me banging on having returned from London and then me watching it on BBC4 last nite...!

                              Maybe time for some Mozart...
