BBCMM Rachmaninov 3 Isle of the Dead BBCPO/Storgards

I seldom buy BBCMM nowadays but spotted this in WH Smith when coming back from Birmingham the other week . I have given it a spin today and it is very impressively played , characterful and energetic . Recommended . I have not listened yet to the Isle of the Dead - a work that does very little for me.

Actually, the Isle of the Dead is very good too - much more colour in it than in some washed out dull grey performances.

I have never heard any version of it except the Reiner/CSO. It virtually never turns up in concert, even in Rachmaniov's anniversary year

Mentioned in passing in the recent BaL thread on the Symphonic dances: post #20 and a few thereafter:

It opened the concert broadcast on Radio 3 from the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester last Thursday 30th March, performed very well by the same forces as on the BBCMM cover disc.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001k8d5. Three more weeks to listen.

David Robertson did it in 2011 during his spell as Chief Conductor, BBC S.O. (I was sorry he wasn't offered, or at any rate didn't become, Chief Conductor). It's a fine performance which should be repeated.

Previn includes it in his LSO cycle on EMI, as does Pletnev with the Russian National Orchestra on DG.

I see there are also recordings by Petrenko/RLPO, Janssons/St Petersburg PO; Berlin Phil/Maazel and Litton/RPO!

Didn't the Ashkenazy win when Isle of the Dead was a BAL ?
