From searching around, it appears to be the Berlin Phil under Kempe in, well, the New World Symphony, which HMV seem to think was by Elgar.

Sums up HMV, I'm afraid. I get the impression that the Classical repertoire is little more than an inconvenient sideshow in most of their branches. And most of the staff don't have a clue.

Apart from the flagship Oxford Street store, they're a complete waste of time.

Regrettably, this is broadly true -and not just of HMV either; it has been my experience that a visit to a specialist "classical" CD store is pretty much mandatory if one wants any intelligent comment or advice about what's on sale (places such as Harold Moores, Bath Compact Discs, etc.).

But to return to the topic, Elgar did almost write a - if not actually the - New World Symphony, did he not? What else might be signified by those "bronze doors" and what may have lain beyond them if not some new world? (OK, so now I suppose I've unwittingly handed over an open invitation to Elgar 3 detractors to say their piece, but never mind...)

First find your specialist store. New World can't be by Elgar - Kempe didn't do Elgar! No Payne, maybe some gain. Seriously, the label which HMV is advertising, somewhat badly, from the mix of titles looks like some out of copyright LP conversions - anyone tried any and if so what's the quality?

This is a reissue on CD, using the orginal cover design, of HMV's LP ASD 380, issued in 1958, the first year of commercial stereo releases. Its one of rarer items in the ASD series and much coveted by collectors. I dont recall anything particularly memorable about it, but it is Kempe and the BPO, so I expect its fine stuff.

I ordered the Tchaikovsky 1812 and Hamlet Overtures (LPO, Boult) a few days ago (a bit of nostalgia - the Ace of Clubs issue was the first LP I ever requested, and got, as a birthday present: my 9th birthday IIRC).
