Just listening to this on Qobuz . I think it’s really good . Combines the best features of the original cast recording - youthful Broadway voices - with the best of the Bernstein - superb orchestral performance . The first trumpet is little short of sensational in the Mambo - even though he ( I’m assuming ) takes a few liberties with the notes. This is a classic …beautifully conducted by Dudamel.

And , subjectively , a very in your face recording balance which I quite like but is a long way from EMI recordings of the 60’s . But the singing is of an exceptional standard . So in tune one possibly suspects electronic help or maybe they really are that on the note ….
Wish they would credit the band on Qobuz….

Guess I ought to reserve judgement until I've seen the entire movie, but from what I can see from the various clips and trailers, the dance sequences are "no better than all right".
The movement and dance sequences, from the opening "march" of the Jets, were a key part of the '61 movie, and which kept me hooked.Last edited by Quarky; 31-12-21, 10:26.

One of the things I am most grateful to my late mother for is that she took me to see and hear West Side Story during its late 1950s run at Mer Majesty's Theatre. She hated the drums, in particular, but I loved the whole experience. I was 10, at the time.
