Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C Major, D. 944 "Die Große" (Live at Ozawa Hall, Tanglewood, 8/21/2007)

    Schubert
    Symphony No. 9.

Schumann Manfred Overture; Symphony No. 4 (1841).

    Beethoven Piano Concertos 2 & 4.

    Stanley Hoogland (fp)/O18thC/Bruggen.
Live recordings 2001 - 2007, from Boston Tanglewood (Ozawa Hall); Vredenburg Utrecht; and KKL Luzern (Beethoven).

Plain White Covers, Dates and Venues given, but no notes or further details. Live and unedited with (brief) applause. Stream/Download only in Qobuz Lossless. Released 3/09/21.

You have to take the rough with the smooth - slips, imperfect ensemble, mis-intonations etc - but these are rare and the depth of insight in Bruggen’s leadership, the beauty of the orchestra (those springy, resiliently rhythmical strings...) and the spontaneity of their response, the sheer urgency and intensity of the live event; above all those special Bruggen-iste touches - come across very vividly.

Pick of the bunch - the Schubert Great C Major, well over an hour with the repeats, a performance of huge excitement and endless interpretive interest, the open earthy wind and brass textures a constant pleasure. Just as thrilling as the earlier release of the Brahms Violin Concerto with Zehetmair.

Schumann’s Manfred, Schumann 4 (1841 - often startlingly idiosyncratic, if a little less well played than the searching account of the overture here); and the Beethoven Concertos from Luzern 2001.... Hoogland is wonderfully eloquent and Bruggen the perfectly faithful accompanist. Both are very rewarding as one-off live events in fine, spacious and atmospheric sound - the latter is excellent throughout.

Not sure if this counts, as I'm not sure what are the criteria for this thread. Here goes, anyway.....

    Bruckner
    Symphony no. 3 (1877 and 1889 versions)
    Adagio (1876)
New Philharmonia Orchestra of Westphalia / Johannes Wildner (Naxos)

    Two highly enjoyable CDs.

Autumn Classical (New) Releases, generally, ..... as with the other one on Bruckner 4x3 (highly recommended...) and the Martinu...pity the Naxos didn't include the 1873 3rd as well - a 3x3, like the new Hrusa on the 4th...!....

But any free (musical) associations are welcome...!
