    André Cluytens

Further to the recent discussions regarding this conductor's recordings of Beethoven's Pastoral, etc., I note that three options for obtaining his complete commercial recordings are available. There is a boxed set of 65 Cds for around £172, and two download collections, one of the Stereo recordings and the other of the mono. These download options come in a range of sample rates and quantizations but in all cases work out cheaper than the CD box. They can also be streamed at up to 96/24 definition from QOBUZ et al.

    The Presto Classical options are:

André Cluytens - Complete Stereo Orchestral Recordings, 1957-1966. Erato: 9029582669. Buy download online. David Oistrakh (violin), Gérard Pichaureau (trombone), Georges Balbon (violin), Gabriel Tacchino (piano), Kerstin Meyer (contralto), Nicolai Gedda (tenor), Gré Brouwenstijn (soprano), Frederick Guthrie (bass), Samson François (piano), Marcel Callègue (trombone), Robert Casier (oboe), Lucien...

    and

André Cluytens - Complete Mono Orchestral Recordings, 1943-1958. Erato: 9029583048. Buy download online. Monique de la Bruchollerie (piano), Marcelle Meyer (piano), Zino Francescatti (violin), Jeanne-Marie Darré (piano), Lucien Thévet (horn), André Navarra (cello), Maurice Duruflé (organ), Louis Noguéra (baritone), Martha Angelici (soprano), Marguerite Long (piano), Jean Giraudeau (tenor), Michel...

I bought the box when it appeared in 2017 (but at nothing like its current price) - and I thought that I wasn't the only forumista to have done so(??). One irritating aspect is the actual box itself where the contents box doesn't fit very well into the sleeve so it's difficult to access the CDs. Price apart, that would be enough to drive me into buying the downloads should I ever wish to duplicate the purchase. It meant duplicating the Beethoven cycle but there was plenty else from the Cluytens back catalogue which I was happy to acquire.

You were not the only forumista and this one is the proud owner - I think I probably paid about half the current asking price and in addition to the BPO Beethoven there are some lovely 50s/Early 60s sounds from French orchestras. This thread is a good nudge to have a good listen to the set.

I have been enjoying the Wagner Bayreuth Live box of 10 CDs @ £14.99 comprising Tannhauser, Mastersingers and Lohengrin from the late 1950s. Strong casts, fine playing and Cluytens keeps sufficient forward momentum.

My first encounter with this conductor on record was when singing the Fauré Requiem for the first time in school. It was the Angel LP that I borrowed from the local record library, and took great pleasure in trying to emulate Fischer-Dieskau in the Libera me! I hardly noticed then how dreadful the French choir sounded.

I wish someone - Orfeo??? - would release his 1965 Bayreuth Parsifal so I can replace my rather scrundgy radio tape of this marvellous marvellous performance.

A friend recently put me into Opera Depot, whence much of his hard-earned cash has apparently been deposited.

Yes, I guess a CD was once available, but it must be a lot better than that scratchy noise on YouTube.

One would hope so, but I would not be too sure. Youtube tends to use 128kbps aac. I am not sure what data rate Opera Depot uses for their less efficient mp3s.

You can get the same performance on CD from House of Opera (although the shipping rates are quite expensive)

                      Or on MP3 for $4.19

It might also be available from the Premiere Opera website, but you now have to register to look at their catalogue, so I can’t check.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Thanks LHC. This should be good news for ARB (#6) especially as the CDs are on sale, despite the high delivery cost. In these circumstances, I would normally ask a relative in the US to send on the package at lower cost.

From what I’ve heard, this performance sounds like essential listening for grail followers.

His complete Ravel recordings are available from Warner for very little money on Amazon.

OUR RECORDINGS: What can I say, I have been hooked on live recordings of opera for almost my entire life.  A live recording can capture the energy and magic of a performance in a way that a studio recording, no matter how technically advanced, cannot.   Accordingly, we go to great pains to make sure that we have found
